You know that feeling when someone asks "How are you doing?" and you automatically say "Grand" even though you're falling apart inside?
Or when you catch yourself numbing out with scrolling, shopping, or staying busy because sitting with what you're actually feeling feels too scary?
I've been reflecting on this Dr. Gabor Maté quote: "It's not about feeling better, it's about getting better at feeling," and I feel It' something I think we all do.
𝐖𝐞'𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝.
Anxious? Take something. Sad? Distract yourself. Angry? Push it down. We've become experts at avoiding our inner landscape instead of learning to navigate it.
But what if our emotions aren't the enemy? What if that anxiety is trying to tell us something important about our boundaries? What if that sadness is actually grief that needs to be felt and witnessed? What if that anger is pointing us toward something that desperately needs to change?
𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐲 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦, 𝐰𝐞'𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
The thing is...those feelings don't just disappear—they get stored in our bodies, our relationships, our patterns. They show up as chronic tension and stress, repeated conflicts, or that nagging sense that something's just...off.
But here's what I'm learning... 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 "𝐟𝐢𝐱" 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬.
Instead of "How can I make this go away?" we start asking "What is this here to teach me?" Instead of pushing through, we learn to pause and listen. Instead of numbing, we practice feeling—really feeling—with compassion for ourselves.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧.
