Addressing bias in healthcare is crucial for equitable treatment, especially for pregnant Black women. Roni Caryn Rabin's series of articles for The New York Times highlights the devastating impact of unconscious bias on maternal health.

Studies reveal disturbing disparities in care. Black women face dismissive attitudes, leading to deadly consequences for both mothers and babies. Instances of doctors dominating conversations with Black patients and expressing scepticism towards reported symptoms have been documented.

This systemic bias translates into worse pregnancy outcomes for Black women, even compared to white women with similar complications. The medical community acknowledges these biases and is implementing measures like anti-bias training and case reviews to address these issues.

Experts stress that many healthcare professionals don't consciously harbour biases, yet these unconscious biases influence their care. Dr. Cristina M. Gonzalez rightly points out that unconscious biases often govern decisions, impacting patient care significantly.

The heartbreaking experiences shared by individuals shed light on the real, devastating consequences of biased healthcare. Instances where medical staff disregarded critical symptoms, leading to stillbirths and maternal deaths, demand immediate attention and reform in healthcare practices.

This critical issue emphasizes the urgent need for change in medical practices, ensuring equitable, empathetic, and attentive care for all patients. We are working collectively to address unconscious bias in healthcare and strive for equitable treatment for every individual, regardless of race or background.

It is part of our mission to highlight interesting scientific studies that bring new perspectives into women's health, especially concerning pregnancy.

Are women who had preeclampsia at higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE)?

Enlightening findings from a recent cohort study of 522,545 primiparous women published in JAMA show that preeclampsia, which is a pregnancy-induced hypertensive disorder, emerged as a factor linked to increased VTE risk during pregnancy, the puerperium, and even after that period. This association stood firm even after adjusting for potential confounders.

This highlights the need for increased awareness and tailored care for women with a history of preeclampsia to prevent VTE, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, throughout their lives.

This study offers a compelling angle for those fascinated by the intersection of pregnancy complications and long-term health outcomes.

At Metabolomic Diagnostics, we are devoted to sharing groundbreaking studies in women's health. Cardiovascular issues stand as the leading cause of mortality among women, making proactive measures pivotal during pivotal moments like pregnancy.

This recent study (https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/epdf/10.1161/HYPERTENSIONAHA.123.21573), conducted by leading experts, focused on developing a predictive model to identify women at heightened risk for chronic hypertension (CH) based on data collected during their pregnancy. They delved into a cohort of 26,511 women across two consecutive pregnancies, aiming to utilize this critical period to implement effective prevention strategies.

The findings are remarkable. Early pregnancy maternal characteristics, blood pressure, and development of preeclampsia or GH (gestational hypertension) identify three-fourths of women at risk for future CH.

Here are some key highlights:

- Identified Predictors: Factors such as maternal age, weight, blood pressure, ethnicity (Black and South Asian), family history of preeclampsia, parity, and development of preeclampsia or GH emerged as predictors for future CH.

- Preventative Strategy: The model successfully pinpointed three-fourths of women at risk for future CH, showcasing the potential to revolutionize preventive healthcare strategies globally.

- Impactful Results: At a screen-positive rate of 10%, our model incorporating maternal characteristics, early pregnancy blood pressure, and preeclampsia/GH detection achieved an impressive 73.5% detection rate for future CH, offering a promising pathway for early intervention and personalized care.

This research isn't just about data; it's about empowering women with proactive health measures. By identifying risk factors early on, healthcare providers worldwide can implement targeted interventions.

We're committed to leveraging scientific advancements to improve healthcare outcomes. Like and share!

President of the United States Joe Biden has signed a presidential memorandum to establish the first-ever The White House Initiative on Women's Health Research.

The initiative, championed by First Lady Dr Jill Biden, Jennifer Klein, Dr Carolyn M. Mazure, and Maria Shriver, aims to address the historical underrepresentation of women in health research and the insufficient funding allocated to such research.

The President highlights the need for all government agencies related to health, including NIH, HHS, the VA, and the Defense Department, to collaborate and provide a report within 45 days on their current efforts and suggestions for improving women's health. Progress reports will be made available to the President at least twice yearly.

Maria Shriver's leadership and Carolyn's commitment to leading the initiative were acknowledged at the signing ceremony. First Lady Dr Jill Biden expressed gratitude for the President's responsiveness to concerns raised, emphasizing that women deserve better and that this initiative will bring about positive change. They acknowledged the imbalance in women's health research funding and expressed determination to address the issue.

The functions of the memorandum include assessing the federal research landscape, setting priorities, improving coordination among agencies, developing policy recommendations, addressing health disparities, promoting public-private partnerships, and engaging the scientific community. The document also underscores the potential societal gains from increased women's health research investments. Furthermore, it directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to publish the memorandum in the Federal Register.
