Book Recommendation📚

Licensed Mental health therapist, Christina Furnival’s book ‘The Not- So-Friendly Friend’ tells the story of a child navigating her way through peer relationships that are challenging.

✨This could be a helpful resource if you suspect your child is being treated unfairly by a peer or even experiencing bullying. The book encourages children to identify what is acceptable and not acceptable in relationships and to use skills of assertiveness and boundary setting. 👏

* I recommend that when reading this with your child you role play real scenarios that they may encounter in their own lives. Think of situations for which your child can use these skills to help support more positive and healthy friendships. For example, if possible, talk to your child about an experience they have had with a peer and ask -“How did that feel?”, -“Was that kind or unkind?”, -“What could you do or say next time they acted unkindly toward you?”

It’s that time of year again 😎Parents can feel a lot of pressure to fill every day of the summer break with fun trips out and exciting activities 😰. Children, however often take the greatest pleasure in just spending time with you doing the simplest of things. 🥰

Here’s some simple activity ideas which can help develop skills across different developmental domains over the summer months. Remember, make it fun! It is summer ‘break’ after all! ☺️

Children with self esteem feel good about themselves and have the confidence to try new things. I had a few queries following my previous ‘preparing for primary’ post in relation to self esteem and how to help improve confidence in your child.
Positive self esteem can help children;
-Cope better with mistakes.
-Feel liked and accepted
- More likely to try again, even if they fail at first
- Believe in themselves 🥰

The key to fostering healthy self-esteem isn’t through trying to convince children that they’re great. In fact, research tells us that delivering constant lavish praise can instead lead to lower self-esteem over time and less willingness to take on difficult tasks.

👉Here are some tips for you to help your child feel good about themself 🥰🥰

The use of visual aids can support children to learn new vocabulary around the different emotions they might be feeling. 👍

Visual aids may help your child recognise facial and body cues relating to different emotions.
This can also contribute to the development of empathy as they learn to recognise what someone else might be feeling.

You can find some of my favourite books for emotional literacy development in my previous posts on the topic. 📚
Being mummy to an almost 3 and 5 year old, the importance of emotional development is highlighted for me daily! 😄 Here are a few of our most used emotional supports at the moment..

Studies have found that breathing exercises can help children;
-relax their body
-refocus the mind
-reduce stress and anxiety
-lower heart rate
-Increase oxygen levels in the body, leading to a calming effect. 🙌

Deep breathing can help us calm down however, this concept can be difficult for our little ones to understand.
So how can we help encourage our kids to engage in deep breathing when feeling overwhelmed?..🤔

-Modelling is a great tool we can use to help demonstrate this skill to our kids. Breathe in- hold- breathe out. Ask your child if they would like to join in.
Encourage and praise attempts.
Explain that this is what you do to help become more calm and feel better.
- Practice breathing techniques often. Do so when your child is calm so they will be better prepared to use this coping strategy during times when they are feeling overwhelmed.

Reading stories with our children can be a great way to open up dialogue about different aspects of their life and explore emotions.

📚 Books can help children with anxiety; letting them see that they are not alone, normalise their fears and also offer ideas for solutions.

There are many great books available but these are a few of my favourite that can help children with emotional literacy, worry and anxiety management. 😊

Confident children have higher self esteem and self worth. They believe in their own capabilities! 🥰

The development of confidence and self worth begins early. Research by Cimpian et.al found that even toddlers have the cognitive ability to form self-worth.

Building our child's self esteem is an ongoing and important part of our role as parents. It can be hard to know where to start 🤔
Here are some tips to help you support the growth of your child's confidence👇🏼👇🏼

👉Praise attempts, not only successes 👏👏

👉Ask for their opinion and perspective 🤔

👉Encourage them to try new things

👉Give lots of opportunity for your child to engage in things they do well 👏

👉Encourage your child to make choices

👉Finally, role model confidence for your child. Try not to speak badly about yourself or beat yourself up for underachieving. Remember, little ears are always listening! 😬

Studies have found that children who have regular, adequate amounts of sleep have improved behaviour, attention span and overall mental health.

💡 One way to help improve sleep for your child is by having a consistent bedtime routine 👍
Healthy bedtime routines can contribute to positive outcomes such as,
🌙Reduced night awakenings
🌙Improved quality of sleep
🌙Increased sleep duration

One example of a bedtime routine is illustrated above. What does your child’s bedtime routine look like? 😴

Nightmares are extremely common in children and usually
occur in the final stages of a normal human sleep cycle which is known as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. 😴

If your child is experiencing scary dreams there are some things you can do to help them in the moment as well as to help prevent them.
Here are some tips 👇🏼👇🏼
👉🏻Implement a relaxing bed time routine
👉🏻Try to support your child to return to normal sleep. Remain calm- don’t mirror your child’s fear, instead comfort your child and offer soothing comments.
👉🏻Be mindful of what your child is hearing and seeing throughout the day. Avoid frightening tv/films and conversation. Try to become aware of any stressors your child may be experiencing.
👉🏻Offer your child an item such as a blanket or teddy for additional comfort.
👉🏻 Of your child gets out of bed, guide them back to sleep in their own bed. Avoid excessive attention.
👉🏻Finally, consider if your child is going to bed early enough or overtired at bedtime? Studies have found that sleep deprivation may contribute to increased nightmares.

*If your child is consistently waking due to nightmares it may help to seek advice from your GP.
