Back in the day, the only qualification you needed to get hired was your educational background. However, now with the changing times, the ladder to getting a job has become progressively more complicated, and educational background has become the only initial step. Skills and ability to do the job are no longer enough to get you hired. In today’s time, to land your dream job, you will need to satisfy many other criterion and go through the entire complex process, especially if you are an immigrant trying to establish a career in another nation. Those extra criterion prevent immigrants from achieving the most fulfilling jobs and their true potential goes unrecognized. Sometimes, the most qualified candidate is eliminated in the screening process not due to the fact that he/she is not the best candidate for the job, but as a result of extra filters in the hiring process. These consequences often make people feel exclusionary, different, or insignificant which eventually causes mental breakdown.
How are these things going to get changed? How can this be avoided? “Practicing an inclusive workplace culture” is the answer. Inclusive work environments cultivate positive recognition of differences and prove that responses to disability, immigration status, race are not barriers to a positive work experience for everyone. Having an inclusive work culture means favoring the ability of the person to do their job over anything else. The Business in the Community Ireland has launched an initiative called Elevate on 20th May 2021 to bring about this inclusive work culture climate in the Irish job market. Elevate is a pledge to support employers in creating more inclusive workplaces. A workforce that is representative of all members of Irish society is the ultimate goal of this initiative. This pledge encourages Irish businesses to commit to building truly inclusive workplaces by sticking to the core values of inclusion, equality and job opportunities in Irish Society. Till now 45 prominent companies have signed up for “Elevate- The Inclusive Workplace Pledge”. We are delighted to share that, Aditee Manish Gajare, the Co-founder of Lean2Lead, Dublin group and former participant of EPIC program run by Business in the Community Ireland, got an opportunity to be one of the voices from event. In a recent RTE news, Aditee shared her experience of the challenges she faced while finding the right job in Ireland. She spoke about her difficulties in getting her prior work experience recognized by the local job market. She also discussed social inclusion and how her immigrant status created a barrier to her being recognized for her full potential. In response to Aditee's achievement, she says “I was fortunate to represent, to be the voice and face of the eligible talented immigrant communities from across the world 🌎 residing in Ireland who form 12.7%[ of the total population.” This accomplishment of Aditee is definitely an inspiration to all of us.
Aditiee's discussion with several pieces of her study contributing to equal work opportunities for all was aired on RTE news and RTE 1 radio on 20th May 2021. Here’s the piece of her discussion on RTE news: https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2021/0519/1222719-unemployment-research/
