Strike 4 Repeal . The Strike for Repeal is a direct action that will take place on the 8th March 2017. If not, we will strike. What is it? What can I do? If you can strike, do.

Our demand is that the Irish government call a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment by the 8th of March. This strike is based on non-traditional strike actions for human rights that we have witnessed in other parts of the world. In October of last year, thousands of people in more than 60 cities in Poland went on strike to protect their access to abortion, and won. The strike will not be an industrial strike in the traditional sense. It will be inclusive of all types of work, and we encourage participants to be imaginative in how they approach the the action. There will be people in your area also participating and we can put you in touch. If it’s possible, book a day off work in advance. If you are less affected by the lack of abortion provision in this country, show your solidarity by offering to cover colleagues’ hours on the 8th of March. Wear all black or a black armband on the day to signify your support. Stage an event at 12 noon or on your lunch break to remember the 12 women who have been forced to travel for abortion that day, and every day. If you are a business owner, consider giving a day off to your employees or completely closing the business on that day. Withdraw your domestic labour on the day if possible. Consider all the work that you’d typically do on that day, and how withdrawing from it might highlight the contribution that you and millions make every day to a country where we do not have access to basic healthcare. Come up with your own creative way to participate. Every person who has an abortion has to take at least a day, whether to travel or stay at home. Use this day to stand in solidarity with them, and demand change. There are individuals, groups and colleges participating around the country, so depending on where you are, there will be actions nearby in which you can participate. We will release information about the range of events and actions closer to the day of the strike. Get in touch

Tell us at strike4repeal@gmail.com if you’d like to participate and we can put you in contact with other people in your area to strike together. The list of people, groups and colleges participating around the country is always growing. If you want to get involved in organising there are lots of ways to do so, and we would love to hear about any local actions you are planning to highlight the strike on the day. LIST OF EVENTS:

Press release from our friends in Need Abortion Ireland who help people access early medical abortions in Ireland;

'Our service is not sustainable for years to come nor should it exist in a country which respects the healthcare of its women. We appeal for a yes vote on May 25th, we cannot, nor should we have to, provide the care, support and respect to thousands more women in crisis pregnancy in lieu of their doctors and the state.'

Last Monday the Cabinet finally confirmed plans for a referendum on the 8th amendment. The referendum, to take place in May, will ask people if the amendment should be repealed and replaced with a provision that gives full power to the Oireachtas to legislate Ireland's abortion laws.

Strike 4 Repeal threatened to strike if the Government watered down the referendum wording and accompanying legislation. Now, with a majority of TDs intending to vote in favour of a referendum, we are satisfied that our demands will be met. Strike 4 Repeal therefore propose a change in tactics and urge our supporters to get involved with the excellent pro choice work happening across the country. Our focus now must be winning the referendum.

A list of pro choice groups is available here: https://www.abortionrightscampaign.ie/get-involved. If there are no groups in your area yet now is the time to consider setting one up! Creative approaches to the campaign could include:

-Making your own posters, leaflets or stickers and putting them
up in your local area
- Organising pro choice coffee mornings /events in your
workplace
-Holding a pro-choice street party in your local neighborhood
-Canvassing & finding new ways to spread educational material

We express thanks and admiration to all our supporters and comrades who have fought with us on the journey so far. We look forward to continuing this work with you in the coming months, to finally Repeal the 8th amendment and make free, safe, legal abortion services on request a reality in Ireland.

The following request has been made by a sister in solidarity in the North. Let us keep this in mind as we move forward:

It would be a really lovely gesture of solidarity from the south if yous could remember the north when the spotlight for Repeal is on you. This means, mentioning us in interviews and in social media posts. Because of how our political system is set up as well as navigating all the issues that come with trying to effect change in a post-conflict society it's particularly difficult for us to politically agitate and organise.

It was only last year when the DUP became crucial parliamentary players for the Tories that people learned of how badly we have it over here, but all the shock that was part of that reporting has died away and we're left out in the cold once again.

We've always been there for practical support and faciliation for the south, as well as attending protests and marches, and some of us are already trying to figure out how we can get down to canvass as well as how to help online.

Standing together can only strengthen our campaigns, an injury to one is an injury to all after all.

We had one demand...

Tonight the Cabinet finally confirmed plans for a referendum on the 8th amendment. The referendum, to take place in May, will ask people if the 8th amendment should be repealed and replaced with a provision that gives full power to the Oireachtas to legislate Ireland's abortion laws. This is a massive win for the pro-choice movement and tonight we express thanks and admiration to all our supporters and comrades who have fought with us on the journey so far ⚡⚡⚡

For immediate release:

Pro-choice activists to assemble at Dáil Éireann during abortion referendum statements, warn ‘we won’t wait any longer for our rights.
5pm, Wednesday 17th January, Kildare St.
Strike 4 Repeal are calling for people to participate in a ‘Strike Assembly’ outside the Dáil this Wednesday 17th January from 5pm, to watch a live stream of Oireachtas statements on the 8th amendment referendum. The Strike 4 Repeal event on March 8th 2017 saw over 10,000 people occupy O’Connell Bridge in Dublin city centre for three hours, while demonstrations took place in over 50 locations in Ireland and around, to demand the government set a date for a referendum on abortion in Ireland.
The recommendations of the Oireachtas Committee will be debated in statements this week which will inform a referendum question on the 8th Amendment. Leo Varadkar stated last Wednesday that he feels that allowing abortion up to 12 weeks, a recommendation the Oireachtas will be debating, may be ‘a step too far’ despite widespread public, international medical and expert support for the recommendation.
Jen O'Leary, Spokesperson for Strike4Repeal notes ‘We are at serious risk of having a referendum question which will only allow for further weak and dangerous legislation. Our chance to have fully accessible abortion rights hinge on the framing of this question and the legislation that follows it. While we are confident that Ireland will vote pro-choice in this referendum we can only vote on the questions put to us, if the referendum simply proposes to replace the 8th or restrict access to abortion then our health and wellbeing will continue to suffer’.
Strike4Repeal are asking people to assemble outside the Dáil next Wednesday 17th January from 5pm to watch the debate live.
The action is not a ‘Strike’ as last March was, but a chance to gather and decide what action is necessary if the government attempt to weaken the proposed recommendations or replace the 8th with restrictive legislation.
