I reflected recently on what I have learnt about teaching children a creative skill. If you’re hoping to bring more creativity into your child’s life at home whether through sewing or anything else, here are some things I like to keep in mind in our classes.

CLOTHING CARE👖
Truth be told there is only ever one author and account that I have come across that I think does an excellent and consistent job on this topic.

has endless videos that have taught me so much about taking better care of my clothing (my wool jumpers are very grateful) and she is also the author of Garment Goddess, a book that is always in reach in my home.

Sustainabilty is many things but really learning to take care of what we have is an incredible tool to ensure we buy less and really value what we buy. Also, in my experience, since becoming more confident in how to care for my clothing I’m happier to spend a little more on something because I know I can keep it looking well.

Intro Sewing Workshop (Beginners)
If you’ve always wanted to learn how to sew, this workshop is the perfect place to begin. I have two dates in early 2026 (teen dates to come)
📍 Monkstown – Sat Jan 24th
📍 Mount Merrion – Sun Mar 22nd

In this relaxed, entry-level workshop, you’ll learn how to:
• Set up and thread a sewing machine
• Wind a bobbin + follow a simple pattern
• Sew your own tote bag from recycled canvas (GRS certified ♻️)

We provide everything — good quality fabrics, machines, and all materials — so you can simply arrive and enjoy the process. A coffee + scone break is included.

Leave with new skills, confidence, and something beautiful you made yourself.

A little update on our classes, courses, and workshops... We are going on a little break for the next 9 months as I await a new arrival to my family. Classes will resume in late September 2025 in all locations, and details of these classes will go live by the end of July. This also means we will have no summer camps in 2025.

Whilst I am here, I must thank all the kids, adult students, and parents whose children have attended Creative Assemble in 2024, and thank you for your well wishes. It's been a great great year, and it's a shame to hit pause, but there's other important work to be doing over the next nine months, and then it's back to business.

To be the first to hear about September 2025 classes, please visit the link in our bio to register your interest.

REDUCING OUR FABRIC WASTE It's easy to take a new piece of fabric and cut at your leisure, but in class we aim to use and teach fabric with care. There are some obvious things like cutting as close the edges as possible but naturally in any sewing environment you are left with scraps, so what do we do with them? Well, the small scraps get cut up to create filling for little hanging decorations that we make should a student finish a project early. Larger scraps both from the shirts from and our own fabrics get ironed onto vilene (a fusiable interling that helps add weight to a fabric) and we then cut small shapes to form the body of our decorations.

It's a good start but there is always more we can do. In our September Kids sewing course we will be continuing to use shirting that cannot be sold in all our products in an effort to cut down on the use of new fabrics.
