Clinical Pilates and Posture Re-Education:

With more and more adults and children spending longer periods sitting in front of computers and tablets, both at work and at home, and with the resulting increase in neck and back problems, the importance of good and improved posture is being realised.

Clinical Pilates can be very helpful in addressing this problem. Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on the central core/trunk muscles of the body and from there emphasises good position/posture for the low back and neck. They are gentle exercises involving hold positions and do not have any heavy impact on the joints.

Clinical Pilates takes a medical approach encompassing the Pilates exercises but taking in to account the fact that some people will have some problems such as back and neck pain and wish to exercise under medical supervision without aggravating them. At Booterstown Physiotherapy Clinic, clinical Pilates classes are held most evenings.

Classes are limited to a maximum of five people per class so the class caters to the individuals’ needs. The classes are given by specialist Pilates-trained chartered physiotherapists Dearbhla Burke and Dara Clifford and the course of classes runs for six weeks.

Some patients may need an individual approach to improving their posture and so reduce the incidence of neck and back injury. Here the physiotherapist will look at posture re-education assessing posture, flexibility and muscle strength of the patient and devise an exercise programme to address the weaknesses that are present.

Classes are held Monday through Thursday at 6.15 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. with lunchtime classes at 11.30 a.m. and 12.45 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. The courses are six weeks long. Receipts can be used as a medical expense for health insurance and income tax purposes.

New acupuncture clinic available at Booterstown Physiotherapy 😁

Acupuncture is one of the many skills employed within physiotherapy as part of an integrated approach to treat pain and inflammation. Physiotherapists base their treatments on scientific research and clinical evidence that Acupuncture can reduce pain. There is an increasing number of research publications in the UK and worldwide proving the treatment effectiveness of acupuncture when compared to (chemical) medication for example.

Acupuncture can help many conditions such as:

1) Migraines.
2) Whiplash.
3) Acute or chronic neck pain.
4) Acute or chronic back pain (upper and lower).
5) Shoulder pain e.g rotator cuff, frozen shoulder etc.
6) Elbow pain such as tennis or golfers elbow.
7) Hip, knee or ankle pain and conditions.
8) Osteoarthritis.

and many more conditions!!!

If your injury or condition is not listed please contact to see if you are suitable for acupuncture.

Can anyone have acupuncture?

There are certain health conditions that may stop you receiving acupuncture or mean that the treatment should be used with caution. It is important to let your physiotherapist know:

• If you have ever experienced a fit, seizure, faint or if you have epilepsy;
• If you have a pacemaker or any other electrical implant;
• If you have a bleeding disorder e.g. haemophilia;
• If you are taking anti-coagulants or any other medication;
• If you have damage to heart valves, or have any risk of active infections;
• If you are pregnant or trying to conceive;
• If you have a known metal allergy – specifically to stainless steel;
• If you have a needle phobia;
• If you have a known infection or poor skin condition in the area to be treated;
• If you have a deficient or weakened immune system;
• If you have diabetes;
• If you have low blood pressure;
• If you have been prescribed any medicine;
• If you have cold/flu symptoms or feel generally unwell.

Join the revolution today and start our new healthy HIT Pilates class starting at the practice soon 💪🏼

Healthy Hit Pilates is the most challenging pilates workout yet. It was created by founder of the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI) Glenn Withers and is a combination of High Intensity interval Training, HIT principle and Pilates movements in a structured licensed program. Chartered Physiotherapist, Dara Clifford is qualified to teach this HealthyHIT program.
Healthy HIT is a series of 6 classes each lasting 30-45 minutes that works you hard but teaches you correct technique to ensure you complete the workout the correct way.

Many people who carry out High Intensity Training do so with poor technique and work at a level that their bodies may not be capable of, hence increasing risk of injuries. This Healthy HIT Pilates ensures that the same benefits of HIT are achieved with correct form and function.

If you want to be highly challenged in Pilates, this is the class for you.

Why do it?

1) It’s quick (30-45 minutes). A recent study from the American College of Sports medicine shows that a 25 minute session of HIIT promotes more health benefits than typical ‘long’ workout of an hour or more.

2) It burns more fat, longer. HIIT elevates post exercise metabolism (for up to 24 hours after your session). You continue to burn fat faster than normal for an entire day after the workout.

3) No equipment needed.

4) It retains muscles and helps to gain lean muscle mass.

5) Excellent way to enhance you sporting ability.

Click on each image for further instructions and let me know your scores :)
If you are able to complete the five exercises with proper technique (and the required reps in the specified time), you are safe and will benefit from this class.

If you require further instructions or have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to ask.
