The Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapies represents over 200 registered art, dance-movement, drama and music therapists working across Ireland in health, educational, social care, disability & community settings. The Creative Art Therapies are evidence-based health professions, defined as the planned and creative use of a specific art form to accomplish individualised clinical goals within a therapeutic relationship by a qualified Creative Arts Therapist. Therapists work with individuals and groups of all ages focusing on physical, communicative, psychosocial, cognitive and emotional needs. Therapists work alone, in collaboration and as an integrated part of multi-disciplinary teams, assessing clients’ needs, designing and implementing therapy programmes and evaluating interventions. IACAT’s members have Master’s level qualifications in their specific arts therapy and adhere to our Code of Ethics. The IACAT monitors professional practice, promotes the Creative Arts Therapies and is working towards statutory recognition. Statutory Recognition will promote the highest standards of practice among therapists, ensure that qualified, regulated professionals deliver services and safeguard the public. Training - IACAT approves 3 Creative Arts Therapy Master's programs in the Republic of Ireland:

MA in Music Therapy, Irish World Academy, University of Limerick

MA in Art Therapy, Crawford college of Art and Design, Cork Institute of Technology

Today, our Chair Andrea Clare Plunkett and our Secretary Noémie Cattez attended a Department of Health workshop focused on the future regulation of health and social care professions.

This important national process is exploring how professions are assessed in terms of risk and how proportionate approaches to regulation can support public protection. We were proud to represent all Creative Arts Therapies and to contribute to discussions on standards, complexity of practice, and the value of our work within the wider health and social care system.

As an association, we welcome the opportunity to engage with this evolving framework alongside our ongoing engagement with CORU and will continue to advocate for approaches that uphold public safety while recognising the depth and integrity of creative arts therapy practice.

Our Chair, Andrea Clare Plunkett, recently spoke with Claire on the The Claire Byrne Show about the role of Creative Arts Therapies in schools.

While counselling for school children is widely recognised as valuable, there are concerns that within the current Department of Education pilot counselling scheme some students may miss out on the unique benefits that Creative Arts Therapies can offer — both for children with additional needs and those in mainstream education.

Andrea also discusses how Creative Arts Therapies differ from more traditional approaches.

📣 Dear members, there’s still time to sign up for Liz Atkin’s workshop this Saturday, 21st February – don’t miss out!

💻 Format: online
🗓️ Date: 21st February
⏰ Time: 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Liz will talk about her experience with skin picking disorder (formerly known as dermatillomania or excoriation), and how this developed through her drama, dance and movement training into an art practice: charcoal as a means to recovery.

This workshop has a practical art making component.
Please have paper or card, charcoal or pastel, eraser, rag, and perhaps some objects to explore texture together.

Dear Members,

The Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapists (IACAT) and the British Association of Dramatherapists (BADTH) are deeply saddened to share the passing of our member and friend, Áilbhe Hines.

Áilbhe was a highly valued member of the creative arts therapy community, with deep involvement across both organisations. She served on the IACAT Council and was an active, committed contributor to the life of the association.

Alongside her work as a creative arts therapist, Áilbhe was an artist in her own right. Her creativity, integrity, and care for the arts and for people were evident in all that she did. She brought thoughtfulness, warmth, and commitment to her professional and creative work, and her presence will be deeply missed.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Áilbhe’s family, friends, and all those who knew and loved her. Her loss will be felt across the creative arts therapy community in Ireland, the UK, and beyond.

‘May the earth be soft beneath you.
May the wind carry you gently.
May you rest in the rhythms of the natural world.’
