The programme consists of thirty sessions delivered over six weeks by a multidisciplinary team which includes a medical addiction specialist, a cognitive behavioural therapist, an addiction counsellor, a family therapist and a relaxation therapist. The time commitment is approximately 4-5 hours a week which is designed to provide flexibility, particularly for those who are working or have other personal commitments. Dr Garrett McGovern, Medical Director at the Priority Medical Clinic, has extensive experience of treating addictive disorders with a particular expertise in op**te addiction. Research shows that outpatient treatment is as successful as inpatient treatment in the management of alcohol and substance abuse. It is significantly cheaper and allows individuals to deal with their problems in the real world.

So sad to learn of the passing of Dr Herman Joseph. An incredible advocate for methadone treatment. He was there at the start with Nyswander and Dole and championed the cause of people blighted with he**in dependence right until his death. I was lucky enough to spend a couple of days with him at the IHRA conference in Warsaw in 2008. He was a font of stories about those early days of methadone treatment in New York. I'll treasure the experience. RIP.
