Box breathing is a style of breathing that involves breathing in, holding your breath, exhaling and holding your breath for counts of 4 seconds each time you go around the box. When we experience feelings of stress, worry or anxiety, box breathing is a great way to calm our nervous system, as it activates our relaxation response 🍃

If you are going to try it, you might find it helpful to repeat the four steps, around the box, on repeat, for 2 minutes. If that goes well, you can increase the time to 5 minutes ⏰

It can help by taking your attention from worrisome thoughts, so that you can count. You will typically find it is quite difficult to overthink and properly count at the same time!

Starting therapy can feel daunting. Often the hardest part of any journey is simply taking the first step. But the fact that you’re even considering therapy suggests that you’re ready for something to change.

There are lots of things that impact our mental health, such as our physical health, our food, our sleep, fresh air, relationships and so much more. When we want to improve our mental health it makes sense that we will want to make changes to those areas of our lives. However, a trap we can sometimes fall into, is trying to change everything, at once.

Without meaning to, we can set ourselves up for failure, as changing everything we do, all at once, is simply too overwhelming. It might leave us feeling worse than when we started.

Instead aim to only make ONE change at a time. This allows our body and mind to catch up, to accept this new way of doing things as normal, for us. You might find it helpful to take on no more than one new thing each week, or depending what change you're making, no more than one new thing a fortnight. Try it out and see what works best for you!
