DRY SCOOPING
Pre-workout supplement powders are marketed as products that can improve exercise performance. Their use has increased in popularity in recent years. They typically contain performance-enhancing ingredients such as caffeine, beta alanine and citrulline.
Some of the ingredients are at a high concentration. It is recommended that the powder be diluted in water before consumption.
A new trend call 'DRY SCOOPING' has emerged on a popular social media platform. This involves ingesting the powder directly from its container without mixing in water.

THE NEED TO KNOW
🟢 Ingestion of a serving of a pre-workout powder without prior dilution in water results in the rapid delivery of a large dose of ingredients into the body.
🟢 Some of these products can contain as much as 500mg of caffeine per serving ( equivalent to ~5 cups of coffee).

THE RISKS
đź”´ Swallowing a large amount of dry powder can result in choking and/or breathing difficulties.
đź”´ Caffeine when used in excess or consumed quickly can cause rapid heart rate, chest pain, dizziness and tremors. Exercise can enhance the effects.
đź”´ People who have underlying heart and lung disease are more at risk of developing symptoms.

THE ADVICE
âś… Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.
âś… Seek urgent medical advice if you experience unwanted symptoms after using a pre-workout supplement.

A heart attack happens when a coronary artery on the surface of your heart that supplies blood to your heart muscle becomes blocked. This stops the blood flow to that part of the heart muscle and if it is not unblocked quickly, that part becomes damaged and begins to die.

Not heart related but very important number to know

One of these is a sweet and one is a toilet cleaner. If an adult can't tell them apart, how can a child? Call the NpicIreland on 01 809 2166 if your child or someone you know has eaten something they shouldn't have. We also give advice on inhalation, eye and skin exposures.

Killargue Defibrillator And Community Responders were recently anonymously donated a defibrillator training device, this is a wonderful piece of equipment that will allow us the opportunity to practice using the defibrillator on a maniquin without the actual shock. This is a very benifical piece of equipment to our community responders who will get lots of practice in with it so we are always rehearsed and ready if needed.

Do you know about 112? It has been standardised as the pan-European number for emergency services.

If you are abroad you can use this number. It will also find a network if you have no signal using the mobile phone network and route the call through the nearest available network

999 or 112 are the emergency services numbers in Ireland, use 112 if you have patchy or no signal, knowing this number can save a life.

Six members of the Killargue Community have done their Community Responder training today. By learning these vital skills, we can respond to a person who is unresponsive and may have had a sudden cardiac arrest.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure of chest compressions in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation. We have been trained in use of the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) which we fund raised for earlier this year.

There is a list of first responders phone numbers in the AED box which is situated on the left hand side of the church as you look at it. Things you can do to assist is to know your Eircode and write it somewhere visible, this will bring the ambulance service to your door.

Hopefully, we will never need to use the AED, but there is a team of trained CPR community responders to call on in times of emergency.

A little CPR can go along way

Diarmuid O’ Connell was just 23 when he suffered a cardiac arrest while playing in a football match. The cardiac arrest could have killed him if his friend Gerard O’ Leary didn’t step in to save his life.

'There’s no doubt about it, without Ger being trained in CPR I wouldn’t be here today, 'claims Diarmuid.

Luckily for Diarmuid Ger had undergone CPR training and knew exactly what to do.

“I am not from a medical background in any way but I remembered I do know one thing I can do and that was to start compressions. You know you can’t do any harm and you are not going to make things worse if anything you are going to help. It’s important to be calm but also to be clear that you know what you are doing,” Ger said.
