Former Primary School teacher jailed for s*xual offences against children

-----

A former primary school teacher has been jailed today for s*xual offences against two 10-year-old boys.

37-year-old William Maher from Belfast was sentenced to one year in prison and one year on licence.

He is subject to registration requirements for 10 years.

He is also subject to a S*xual Offences Prevention Order for 4 years.

Maher is also barred from the teaching profession and from working with children either in a paid or unpaid capacity.

The offences included three counts of s*xual communications with a child and three counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in s*xual offences on dates between 1 Sept 2021 and 24 May 2022.

After the case, Detective Constable Eszter Aszmann said: “Maher is a child predator who used his position of trust to take advantage of young boys who trusted him.

“Maher preyed on the innocence of his extremely young victims, who should at their age, never have been exposed to the s*xual conversations he initiated with them.

“It is often incredibly difficult for young children, to raise the alarm when an adult they trust targets them in such a way.

“I would like to acknowledge the bravery of these young victims and thank the parents for their unwavering support in helping us to bring Maher before the courts.

“It is important for parents/guardians to understand the signs of child s*xual abuse. We continue to raise awareness and encourage all to educate themselves so as a society we can intervene and safeguard as early as possible. https://www.psni.police.uk/safety-and-support/keeping-safe/child-protection

“Child abuse cannot continue in Northern Ireland, we will do everything in our power to stop predators in their tracks and get victims the justice they deserve.

“If you think a child in your care is being abused in any way do not hesitate to report to us, you are never wasting our time. We are here to help, support, safeguard and bring perpetrators to justice.”

Romanian man (19) accused of s*xually assaulting 15-year-old girl at funfair in Bangor is granted bail to address in London

-----

A 19-YEAR-OLD man from Romania accused of s*xually assaulting a 15-year-old girl at a funfair in Bangor has been given bail to the Woolwich area of London.

Madalin Nicusor Stancui, is charged with s*xual assault and making a 's*xual communication' with the girl on Instagram.

He is charged in relation to April 13 this year.

At Ards Magistrates' Court today he was not produced to the video link from prison where he had been on remand.

At a previous court he had the assistance of a Romanian language translator.

At the earlier court a police officer had opposed bail saying the defendant was a flight risk as the defendant said he was only due to be here for one more week.

The officer said immigration officials said they were going to deport him once the case is finished because he has been "working here illegally".

A defence lawyer told the earlier court the defendant came to Dublin from Bucharest a number of of weeks previously and then had gone to Belfast and "found employment" with a funfair.

The court heard the funfair was "based in Belfast at the time but has since moved to Bangor" and it was alleged an offence happened in Bangor.

The lawyer said his client "wholeheartedly denies" the charges.

He had said: "In terms of the s*xual assault allegation. He denies there was any intentional touching with the complainant's buttocks. He accepts there was physical contact with her once he put his arm around her waist but he denies there was any intentional touching of a s*xual nature".

The lawyer said a "number of messages" had been "exchanged" between the defendant and the complainant on Instagram.

The lawyer said he understood the complainant was at the funfair and "the defendant offered to take a photograph of the complainant and one of her friends beside one of the funfair rides and once the photograph was being taken the allegation is that he pinched her buttocks over her clothes for a number of seconds".

The lawyer said the police account is that he added her on Instagram and the "complainant sent a photograph to him on Instagram and then a number of messages were sent which are of a s*xual nature. He denies that he would intend to carry through with any request that he had made in this messages.

"His instructions are that they were sent in jest. The messages were sent when he was in company of three co-worker friends who helped him write the messages. That would stand some sense because he has very limited English".

At Ards Court today a defence barrister said bail is agreed.

A police officer confirmed they had no objections.

The barrister said the bail address is to Calderwood Street in London where the defendant's mother and stepfather live.

The defendant was given bail of £250 and there is a £500 surety from his stepfather.

There is a condition not to contact the complainant.

The barrister said the defendant has "no criminal record". He said the defendant "doesn't speak any English".

The case was adjourned to June 11.

⚖️ PENSIONER DENIES CAUSING DEATH OF FORMER RUGBY INTERNATIONAL AND PA******LE DAVID TWEED

A North Antrim pensioner today (wed) denied causing the death of a former rugby international, DUP councillor and one-time convicted pa******le David Tweed.

Standing in the dock of Antrim Crown Court 71-year-old Anne Broughton confirmed her identity before the single charge was put to her

Mrs. Broughton, from the Whitepark Road in Ballycastle, entered a formal not guilty plea to causing the death of David tweed by driving carelessly on the Whitepark Road on 28 October 2021.

None of the background facts of the case were opened in court today (wed) but it was reported at the time how 61-year-old Tweed died at the scene when his motorcycle was in collision with a car around 4.30pm that day.

A former international rugby player who was capped four times for Ireland, Tweed served on Ballymena council for the DUP and later the TUV.

As a former member of the Orange Order in Dunloy, he was involved in the Harryville dispute when loyalists picketed a Catholic church in Ballymena but he left the DUP in 2007 over the party's decision to share power with Sinn Fein and later joined Jim Allister's Traditional Unionist Voice.

In 2012 a Crown Court jury found him guilty of 13 counts of indecent assault, gross indecency with a child and inciting gross indecency with a child and he was handed an eight year jail sentence for those crimes.

He appealed however and having served four years behind bars the Court of Appeal quashed Tweed’s convictions, citing the prejudicial nature of the trial judge’s charge to the jury.

In court today (wed) defence KC Kieran Mallon said the defence team had instructed an engineer to produce a report ahead of the scheduled trial.

Both Mr Mallon and prosecuting KC Ciaran Murphy agreed the trial would take less than a week and freeing Mrs Broughton on continuing bail, Judge Alistair Devlin scheduled the trial to start on 8 December with a review of the case on 10 September.

⚖️ FERMANAGH MAN CAUGHT WITH OVER 1,000 CHILD SEXUAL IMAGES WALKS FREE FROM COURT

A Co. Fermanagh man who was caught with more than 1,000 videos and images of kids being s*xually abused walked free from court with a probation order today (wed).

Imposing the three year order on Jason Brown at Dungannon Crown Court, Judge Brian Sherard told the 22-year-old: “While you may not have touched the children concerned, make no mistake you have abused them by looking at these images. You have helped create a market that provokes abuse of children.”

Brown, from Corratistune Road in Enniskillen had earlier entered guilty pleas to 25 charges comprising 15 counts of making indecent images of a child, four of possessing prohibited images of children and three counts of possessing extreme pornographic images and a further three of possessing prohibited images on dates between April 2018 and June 2022.

The court heard police searched Brown’s home and seized a mobile phone which was found to contain 1076 images of child abuse in all categories of seriousness.
In Category A there were 23 images and 10 videos; Category B were 172 images and 6 videos and in Category C, 520 images and two videos.

According to legal guidelines, images at category A depict children involved in penetrative s*xual acts, including r**e and sadomasochism.

There were also 337 prohibited images and one video as well as two extreme pornographic images and three videos.

A defence barrister emphasised that Brown made admissions from the outset and after self-referring himself for offence-focused counselling, had fully completed all courses available to him.

“While it is felt no further input is required, he accepts he would benefit from further statutory intervention,” said the defence.

Judge Sherrard noted Brown was under 18 when all of the offences were committed however they weren’t detected until he was older.

He told him, “These are serious offences. While you may not have touched the children concerned, make no mistake you have abused them by looking at these images. You have helped create a market that provokes abuse of children.”
“The repetition is of profound concern and…the most remarkable aspect of this case is your youth. It seems more than apparent you have taken a wrong turn and it is essential steps are now taken to address that to facilitate your rehabilitation and protect our community.”

In addition to the three year Probation Order Brown will have to sign the police S*x Offender Register for five years.

The judge also imposed a five year S*xual Offences Prevention Order which prohibits use of any computer, mobile phone or device with internet access and use of any iCloud or similar remote media capable of storing digital images, without prior approval by his Designated Risk Manager.

Brown must allow police officers to inspect and interrogate all electronic devices including routers and network devices by physical access and providing all passcodes.

In addition he is also banned from undertaking any activity in paid, private, voluntary or charitable capacity which affords access to children or vulnerable adults, unless approved by his Designated Risk Manager.

Finally, Judge Sherrard granted a Destruction Order for all devices and equipment seized as part of offending.

⚖️PRIEST ACCUSED OF SEXUAL COMMUNICATION WITH A ‘CHILD’ REMANDED AGAIN

A Catholic priest accused of trying to communicate s*xually with a child after he was ensnared by a so-called pa******le hunter gang will be held for at least another month.

Lawyers for Edward Gallagher had been scheduled to apply for bail at Londonderry Magistrates Court today (fri) but defence counsel Stephen Chapman confirmed he was not moving the application today (fri).

Mr Chapman asked District Judge Peter Magill to remand the 58-year-old back into custody and to adjourn the case for a month with the alleged pervert priest “to be produced on the link” on the next occasion.

Gallagher, a priest from Orchard Park in Lifford, is in custody charged with attempted s*xual communication with a child under 16 between 2-17 April this year.

The priest was arrested after a ‘sting operation’ by a pa******le hunter group was live broadcast online and on social media and after the arrest, the Diocese of Derry said it was “aware of an incident outside a hotel in Derry city involving a priest of this diocese”.

“The Diocese knows that a video of the incident has been posted online and we understand the PSNI have been involved. Currently, the diocese has no further information,” said the statement.

In court today (fri) Judge Magill remanded the alleged pervert back into custody and re-listed the case on 5 June.

⚖️ DOCTOR ADMITS HAVING IMAGES AND MOVIES OF CHILDREN BEING SEXUALLY ABUSED

The career of a disgraced doctor was left in tatters today (thurs) after he admitted having images and movies of children being s*xually abused.

Standing in the dock of Downpatrick Crown Court, 40-year-old Alan Trevor Campbell entered guilty pleas to each of the 11 charges against him including five of possessing and six of making indecent images of children.

On an indictment covering a time span between 17 October 2014 and 13 January 2022 Campbell, a registered GP from Silverbrook Park, Newbuildings in Derry, admitted that he had images and videos in categories A, B and C.

According to legal guidelines, images at level A depict children involved in penetrative s*xual acts including r**e or in circumstances involving sadomasochism or be******ty, B relates to non-penetrative s*xual acts while C covers any material not deemed to be in categories A or B.

None of the background facts or details of the case were opened in court but following Campbell’s guilty pleas, prosecuting counsel Breige Gilmore confirmed the defendant has a clear record.

Defence counsel Cameron Faulkner agreed that apart from a pre-sentence report from the probation board, the defence team would not be obtaining any other type of report ahead of the plea and sentence.

Highlighting that the admissions trigger the requirements of the police s*x offenders register, Judge Geoffrey Miller KC ordered that Campbell be served with the relevant documentation and sign the register “before he leaves.”

Turning to Campbell, the judge told him if he has not heard from PBNI in the next two weeks to contact his legal advisers to arrange an interview because “failure to attend without good reason means that I will sentence in the absence of a report.”

“You can rest assured that will not be in your best interests,” Judge Miller told the self-confessed pervert.

Freeing him on continuing bail until 24 June, the judge told Campbell: “These are very serious offences - all options will be open to the court.”

**Predators hiding in plain sight.**

Today’s news in Northern Ireland is another chilling reminder. Trusted figures in our communities, a doctor, a former teacher, and a school welfare officer, convicted or pleading guilty to offences against children. The very people meant to protect and support young lives have instead caused harm.
Safeguarding isn’t just a policy, it’s a responsibility we all share. Awareness, vigilance, and action are crucial to protecting the most vulnerable. Keep the conversation going and ensure children are safe from those who abuse positions of trust.
