With the January Gym Stampede quickly approaching, what advice would I give to those of you embarking on your new fitness journey?
Firstly, Ditch the cardio as your sole form of exercise. Mix it up a little, try HIIT or classes that target functional strength and dynamic movement. If you are going to do cardio in the gym, aim to use wattage output as your guide for indoor cycling. Don't just sit and peddle, crank up your power, there are plenty of apps out there for indoor cycling if you can't get to a good spin class. There is a difference when it comes to spinning classes, steer clear of any spin class where the instructor has you doing stuff like push-ups on the handlebars, they serve no benefit to you what so ever.
If running is your thing, then remember, you are not a hamster, varying your speed and elevation will give you better gains but only use the treadmill on days when weather is too bad......at this point I remember a quote from the cyclist Sean Kelly, "If you think the weather is too bad to train, then go out and train, then decide if it was too bad to go out and train!"
Again there are good apps for running both indoors on the treadmill and out on the roads, use them they will make your workout easier. Yet again weather you are a runner or a cyclists, hit the weights they will boost your performance and give you the gains you're looking for.

Now this second bit of advice ties everything in fitness together not just weight training.
I can still hear my first weight training mentor, Micky Rogers, proprietor of The Gym, Dundalk, coaching me on proper form just over 25 years ago and it is the most important thing in all training.
Concentrate on Proper Form.
What is proper form?
For cycling it is everything, bike fit, body position, hand position, cadence and power output.
For running it is your stride length, foot strike, leg drive, body position, hand shape and head position.
For weight training, it's about head, body, hand and foot position, range of motion (ROM), time under tension and breathing.

If you only remember one thing from this little rant, let it be Concentrate On Having Proper Form.
Remember that and the rest will come in time......

So many gym goers should take time to read this. If it can take a supreme athlete like Jonah Lomu who was monitored all his sporting life all be it the possible cause of his medical problems. The sport supplement industry needs more regulation to ensure that we are not killing the sport stars of the future.

And so a day that all in the rugby community was hoping could be postponed for another 30 years came to pass. "The glories of our blood and state are shadows, not substantial thing

Tomorrow we take on a massive obstacle in the Giants from Munster, Clonmel RFC. They have already surpassed Connemara RFC in the first series of the Round Robin, putting a 40-0 score on the Connacht men. There is no doubt, Denis Leamy's men are a force to be reckoned with.

We now need your support more than ever, bring your flags, bells, whistles, the whole kitchen sink. No doubt the lads are looking to bounce back, but they need your help. There is going to be a serious contest not to be missed. All support is greatly appreciated.

The game kicks off at 2.30 in Mill Road. This is your town, your club.

Obree was one to always think outside the box.
When he attempted the first of his two world hour records, he was unsuccessful on his first attempt. However he made a second attempt less than 24 hours later and was successful.
That in my opinion is the mark of a true champion.

He was known for his innovative approach to tackling the hour record, for his focus on engineering and aerodynamics and for creating his own bikes for his record attempts. Now, 21 years after he set the first of his two world hour records, Graeme Obree has hailed the renewed focus on the discipline…
