Dear Patients,
Many thanks for your patience.
We managed to get a work around solution in place with the phones at 9.30am this morning and with our Internet and email at 12.30pm.
We are operating close to normal but have a backlog of work which we will work hard to clear over next few hours and days.

Dear Patients,
The major Athenry phone/Internet outage from yesterday continues to be an issue this morning.
We can still accept calls by ringing our normal number 091 844489, however there could be long delays. For anyone who feels they urgently need to be seen today, we are offering a walk in service this morning. Just present at main reception. There may be a delay in getting scripts to pharmacies. We are working on a solution for this.
We have no timelind for the phone and Internet issue to be fixed.
Apologies for the inconvenience.

Dear Patients,
Unfortunately there is a line fault in our area of Athenry.
This has left us with no phone or Internet since 10;30am this morning.
Vodafone are working to rectify the issue.
In the meantime, we can still accept urgent calls but one at a time.
For a medical emergency, please call 999.
You can still send emails, but we won't receive them until issue is rectified.
We apologise for the inconvenience.

Dear Patients,
We will be holding a WALK IN flu/covid vaccine clinic for the whole day on:
Tuesday 14th October
Why not pop in and get your flu or covid vaccine or both next Tuesday?
You can get a free flu vaccine if you are:
age 60 and older
age 2 to 17
a healthcare worker
pregnant
living in a nursing home or other long-term care facility
in regular contact with pigs, poultry or waterfowl
someone with a health condition that puts you at higher risk of flu (age 6 months and older)
living with someone who has a health condition that puts them at higher risk of flu
a carer for someone who has a health condition that puts them at higher risk of flu

Uptake of covid vaccine is much higher this year due to the large prevalence of covid virus in our community at present. It is recommended to get both vaccines early. Both vaccines can be given simultaneously.

Dear Patients.
We are due to take our first delivery of flu and covid vaccines later this Month.
To avoid patients having to call us later in the Month when the phone lines are a lot busier, we are asking that you call us next week to book your flu and covid vaccines for our October vaccination Clinics.
Please ensure you communicate this to any loved ones or neighbour's not on social media,
Thank you🙂

Our esteemed colleague Dr Michael McGloin decided it was time to retire from General Practice late last year and worked his final day with us on 31st December 2024.
This marks the end of a special 41 year period for The Surgery.
Dr McGloin moved into General Practice in the mid-west of Ireland before establishing The Surgery with Dr Bridget Keane in Athenry in 1983.

The practice was initially set up beside the historic Arch. In 1990, the practice relocated to Caheroyn Crescent. After a number of extensions, the practice had outgrown that building and the Practice moved again to its current location in the new purpose built Primary Care Centre in Raheen in 2013.

Along with seeing patients in the Surgery, Dr McGloin provided excellent care and assistance to many nursing homes, care institutions and voluntary groups in the various local communities. Dr McGloin has been involved in and has served on the Board of the Irish Pilgrimage Trust (IPT) for the past 45 years. The IPT brings over 500 disabled children to Lourdes at Easter. Dr McGloin has a special interest in sport and sports injuries. He was the team doctor for the Galway Hurling Team from 1987- 2010. He has worked with the Irish Medical Council for 13 years.

Michael continued to promote learning for himself and for others right up to his last day. He provided years of teaching within the Practice and outside it. He was a registered trainer GP for the Galway GP training scheme for over 20 years. He provided post-graduate updates to colleagues in the Irish College of Practitioners Small Group Network. The practice has always facilitated in-house learning for medical students from NUI Galway and McGill University, Canada.
Michael has been a fantastic friend to us. He has been a mentor and a terrific work colleague with oceans of wisdom for us all and this will remain the case. For many of us and his patients it will feel like we are saying ‘bye’ and ‘farewell’ to a family member. His patients and their families no doubt will miss him as he has cared for them and walked with them through their health journey over decades. We at The Surgery will miss his presence but we are delighted that he now has the opportunity to give his time to Anthony his husband, his family, friends and neighbours.
We want to take this opportunity to wish our friend Michael well in his retirement and good health for the future. 🥲

We want to assure Dr McGoins' patients that your continued care is of the utmost importance to us here at The Surgery and that your care will transfer over to another one of our GP's seamlessly and without interruption.

Dear Patients,
We wish to update you that we have no power or phone coverage at our Practice this morning. This is affecting our contingency emergency phone also which had been put in place.
Any appointments scheduled for this afternoon are now cancelled. We have no way to notify you directly.
We do however have a GP on site for any patient who feels they need to see a GP urgently. Just walk in.
More updates to later.
