Flat feet (also called fallen arches) is a common condition where the arches of the feet collapse, causing the entire sole to make contact with the ground. While some people experience no problems, others may develop pain, swelling, or mobility issues. At MyFeet.ie Podiatry Clinic in Dublin, we regularly treat patients with flat feet and help them stay active, comfortable, and pain-free.
What are flat feet?
Flat feet occur when the natural arch of the foot does not develop properly or becomes weakened. This can happen in both children and adults. Some people are born with flat feet, while others develop the condition over time due to injury, age, or lifestyle factors.
Common causes of flat feet
Genetics – inherited foot structure
Injury – trauma to the foot or ankle
Arthritis – joint changes affecting the foot’s stability
Tendon damage – especially the posterior tibial tendon, which supports the arch
Not everyone with flat feet has symptoms. However, when problems occur, they may include:
Foot pain (especially in the heel or arch)
Swelling along the inside of the ankle
Pain that worsens with activity or standing for long periods
Difficulty walking or running comfortably
Back, hip, or knee pain due to altered posture or gait
Why treatment matters
Untreated flat feet can sometimes lead to:
Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
Bunions and hammertoes
Knee, hip, or back pain due to misalignment
Getting the right treatment early helps prevent long-term complications and improves mobility.
