The first days out in the pasture are a real treat for many horses — and they deserve it! But be aware: fructan levels in grass can be surprisingly high in early spring.
On sunny days, grasses produce plenty of sugars. During warm nights, these are used for growth — but when nights are cold (< 4-5°C), they accumulate instead. That's exactly the situation you often see in early spring. ☀️🌙
For sugar-sensitive horses, high fructan levels can lead to digestive issues, colic or laminitis. Mindful grazing management is therefore essential during this period. 🐴
