The first days out in the pasture are a real treat for many horses — and they deserve it! But be aware: fructan levels in grass can be surprisingly high in early spring.

On sunny days, grasses produce plenty of sugars. During warm nights, these are used for growth — but when nights are cold (< 4-5°C), they accumulate instead. That's exactly the situation you often see in early spring. ☀️🌙

For sugar-sensitive horses, high fructan levels can lead to digestive issues, colic or laminitis. Mindful grazing management is therefore essential during this period. 🐴

𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗻: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿? 🌱

Now that the nights are cold and the days are sunnier, fructan levels in the grass fluctuate significantly. And that’s not without risk for horses that are sensitive to sugar!

When is the best time to turn out a sugar-sensitive horse at this time of year?

✔️ Safe time → Early in the morning, if the night temperature has remained above 4-5°C.
❌ Best to avoid → After a cold night, as fructan levels will be at their highest. A sand paddock is a good alternative.

What happens? 🤔

Grass stores energy in the form of fructan, which is mainly produced through sunlight. At night, the plant uses these sugars to grow—but only if the temperature stays above 4-5°C. If it gets colder, growth stops, and fructan accumulates, making the grass extra high in sugar!

❗Tip: Preventing overgrazing helps too! Fructan is mainly found in the lower part of the plant, so make sure the grass isn’t grazed too short.

Cheltenham Festival 2026 has kicked off, and whether you're there soaking up the atmosphere, or watching on TV....everyone sees the race;
What you don’t see is the preparation behind it.

Training, nutrition, recovery and soundness all play a role.

Supporting joints, muscle function and energy metabolism is part of keeping horses able to train consistently and stay competitive through the season.
That’s why many trainers rely on targeted supplement programmes from Cavalor to support performance and recovery.

Because performance doesn’t just happen on race day — it’s built over time.

Breeding isn’t just about getting a foal on the ground.
It’s about setting that foal up for longevity.

The right support at the right stage matters:
• Cycle & hormonal balance
• Colostrum & early immunity
• Milk replacement when needed
• Weaning support
• Balanced growth & bone development

That’s why we stock the full Cavalor Breeding system — start to finish.

If you’re breeding this season, don’t leave nutrition to chance.
