When I bump into a patient in town and they say:

“Angela, that stuff you gave me was amazing!”

I instantly hope I’ve done nothing illegal… then wonder what the amazing stuff was!!!

I received notification today that UHK is no longer accepting paediatric dermatology referrals, advising us to refer all children’s skin problems to Dublin. I think this is absolutely unacceptable for the people of Kerry. I hope to get more clarification on this.

People often say “the old remedies were the best”. I came across an advertisement for “Mrs Wilmslows Soothing Syrup” in the Kerry Evening Post in 1871. It was advertised as a teething remedy “perfectly harmless..produces quiet, natural sleep, by relieving the child from pain, and the little cherub awakes as bright as a button“. It was widely advertised and sold throughout Ireland and elsewhere.
This seemingly innocent miraculous syrup for teething infants contained MORPHINE!!
That’s why you should always check the ingredients of supplements!!

I hope you don’t mind if I share a snapshot of Tralee’s medical past:
If you had fallen on hard times in Tralee in 1911, you may have ended up at Tralee Union Workhouse, located where the County Buildings are now or what was known to many as ‘Old St.Catherines Hospital’. There were several hundred people recorded here in 1911.
Nearby was the ‘Lunatic Asylum’ as it was called, with heartbreaking records of residents which include children along with very elderly. Causes of admissions were noted as ‘mania’ ‘imbecility’ ‘dementia’ and ‘epileptic’.
Tralee also had a Fever Hospital located where the library is today. Thankfully only a few were in hospital in 1911 with ‘scarlatina’ and ‘typhoid fever’.
Then there was the County Hospital on Strand Road where your name and diagnosis was recorded in the census for all the world to know that you were in hospital with haemorrhoids, a strangulated hernia or a fractured femur in 1911!

I know we’ve plenty of problems in the healthcare system in Ireland with crippling waiting lists and lack of resources, but when I look at these old records I realise how far we’ve come and am quite grateful for modern medicine!

I want to thank our patients most sincerely for your support throughout the year. We have received so many lovely cards and gifts and I am truly grateful to you all. 2025 brought a fresh start for us, but I am so proud of what we have achieved this year, creating a warm and caring environment for our patients.
We would be nothing without our patients and we look forward to caring for you in the years ahead.
Dr.Angela.

Since completing a diploma in diabetes from the University of Warwickshire a few years ago, I’ve been involved in tutoring on the Diabetes in Primary Care course in U.C.C.
If you are a health professional interested in diabetes care, this is a wonderful opportunity and where I started pursuing my interest in diabetes. We manage the vast majority of our patients with type 2 diabetes solely in primary care.

07/12/2025

We are running an extra clinic on Monday 8th of December after 5pm to cope with the recent rise in respiratory illness. Please contact reception on 066 7120002 if you need to avail of an appointment.

A very interesting article by Professor Rónán Collins, advocating for a vaccine programme for older people. Shingles and RSV vaccines are available in the UK, something I would strongly support here. Both are available but at a cost.

The RCPI national clinical lead for the stroke programme says we should have a comprehensive vaccine schedule to protect older population as we do for children.
