Our team at Mater Private Network Cork took part in the 50Plus Show at the end of September, offering free heart and blood pressure checks to over 400 people who attended the show.

The results revealed that as many as 1 in 5 participants had elevated blood pressure, and 1 in 3 had borderline or abnormal ECG findings. Many were unaware of these issues, highlighting the importance of regular checks, as high blood pressure often has no symptoms but poses a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke.

This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to promoting heart health and raising awareness of preventable risks. By encouraging regular monitoring and early action, we aim to help people take positive steps towards better heart health.

In a recent interview with the Irish Independent, Dr. Len Harty, consultant rheumatologist at Mater Private Network in Dublin and Cork, spoke about gout – a form of arthritis caused by a build-up of uric acid in the joints. The condition typically develops suddenly and resolves quickly, but if left untreated can lead to permanent damage. Risk factors include lifestyle, being overweight, certain medications, family history, and other medical conditions. The good news is that gout can be effectively treated with medication, and future flare-ups may be prevented through a combination of lifestyle changes and long-term treatment.

Loss of bladder control affects up to one in three women, as well as some men, yet it remains a widely misunderstood condition. Known as urinary incontinence, the condition may involve occasional leakage while laughing or coughing or a sudden, overwhelming urge to urinate.

Even though it's a common issue, urinary incontinence is not spoken about openly. Social discomfort surrounding bladder issues often discourages discussion, leading to feelings of shame and isolation.

There is also a belief that treatment options are limited or ineffective. In reality, a variety of evidence-based therapies are available that can significantly improve or resolve symptoms.

Ankle arthritis is relatively uncommon compared to arthritis in the hip or knee, but when it does occur, it can significantly affect daily activities. It may develop following an injury to the ankle, which can lead to arthritis over time. In other cases, it may be linked to a systemic form of arthritis that affects multiple joints throughout the body.

In this video, Mr. Adeel Memon, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Mater Private Network Cork, discusses the potential causes of ankle arthritis and why it may occur in one or both ankles. Visit our website to learn more https://bit.ly/4fjPzCE
