Delighted to be invited to give my annual talk recently on βlifestyle as medicineβ to UCD School of Medicine Students. It is such a privilege for me to be able to influence the thinking of these brilliant young future doctors.
To my surprise, I was told today that this was my 10th year doing this. Time passes so quickly. I believe it is so important to expose the doctors of tomorrow to the science and ideas of how lifestyle habits can prevent and improve so many chronic health conditions.
Some key findings :
Heart Disease : 80% preventable.
Type 2 Diabetes : 80% preventable.
Dementia : 45% preventable.
This is achieveable through a combination of the following:
Exercise & Movement
Restorative Sleep
Good Food
Recharge from Stress
Supportive Relationships
Avoiding Noxious Substances
Time in Nature.
Lifestyle change is powerful.
Medicine is powerful.
Used together, thoughtfully, they are far more effective than either extreme.
It is the synergy of these elements that matters most. Recent research published in the Lancet reveals just how beneficial very small positive tweaks can be, in terms of improving healthspan.

None of us can change the past, but starting today you too can begin to step forward into a healthier more revitalised version of you. Simply start. Your future self will be glad you did.
