Today is , a day to remember the dedication, skill and unwavering commitment of physicians in providing high-quality health care to individuals and communities worldwide.
To paraphrase a very wise physician (William Osler), the good physician treats the disease whereas the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.
Just want to take this opportunity to recognise and say THANK YOU to the many doctors I know in Ireland and beyond who go the extra mile in terms of both human compassion and medical care.

When future generations stand before the Jubilee Clock, at St. Pauls Church Lisduggan our hope is that they will see more than a landmark.
They will see a community that, in a time of global turmoil, chose to build.

It is an opportunity to choose

Faith over Fear & Hope over Despair.

We want to build this Jubilee clock together.
In memory of all who were part of this parish from the beginning
For all of us here right now as well as
for future generations to come.
Let it become a symbol of real hope recognising these enduring values of faith hope and love.
This is a wonderful project. If you can support it in any way possible, please do so.
Thank you for reading this.

🕰️ St. Paul’s, Lisduggan – Golden Jubilee Parish Clock

The Diocese of Waterford and Lismore is delighted to support a beautiful and lasting initiative emerging from the Parish of St. Paul’s, Lisduggan, following the celebration of its Golden Jubilee in 2022.

To mark this milestone, the parish has undertaken a project to erect a Jubilee Clock at the front of St. Paul’s Church — a visible and enduring symbol of faith, community, and gratitude for the past 50 years.

This clock, thoughtfully designed around the Christian themes of Faith, Hope, and Love, will stand as a daily reminder of the presence of Christ at the heart of parish life, and as a witness to all who pass by.

A dedicated Jubilee Clock Committee has worked diligently to bring this vision to an advanced stage, and the parish is now seeking support to bring the project to completion.

In the words of Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan:

“ This Jubilee Clock is a beautiful way of marking not only time, but the enduring presence of faith in St. Pauls Church Lisduggan — a legacy that will serve as a quiet witness for generations to come.”

🙏 We warmly encourage you to support this initiative — whether through a donation or by sharing this appeal.

Every contribution will help to create something lasting — a sign of faith, hope, and love for today and for the future.

“So faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13)

When was the last time you experienced a sense of awe? A transcendent moment of wonder or amazement in the presence of
nature, inspirational art, or architecture?
Experiencing even five minutes of Awe each day builds curiosity about philosophy, poetry, people, art and life’s existential questions.
When you experience Awe, positivity neurochemicals including oxytocin and dopamine are released into your system. Oxytocin leads to more openness to others and recharge from the stress response via vagus nerve activation whereas dopamine enhances exploration and wonder. Awe is associated with lower inflammation, measured by the biomarker interleukin-6.
Awe moves you away from the fight or flight stressed state towards vagus and recharge from stress.

Can you make some time to experience awe today or this week? Something your future self will thank you for.

Here in Waterford, it is on our doorstep at Mount Congreve Gardens

A favourite view at Mount Congreve Gardens, Waterford, Ireland. A wonderful place to enjoy the vistas & vitality benefits from time in nature.

Research from Stanford Medical School using fMRI scans as well as Forest Therapy research from Japan, Exeter & other places have found significant health & wellbeing benefits.

These include:
Lower stress
Boost mood, memory, motivation
Boost empathy.
Enhance creativity.
Lower blood pressure.
Support immune system.

If you are from Ireland, make it a must visit place this year.
If you are ‘international’ put it on your list. Your future self will be glad you did.

Wisdom asks the right questions whereas knowledge provides answers. Looking back to learn from great wisdom of the past can inform the present moment and inspire a brighter, better future too.

Millions of lives are lost to cancer every year unfortunately.
Treatments ARE improving with up to half of all cancers preventable and many more curable if detected early.
Sending love & hope to everyone in the world affected by cancer…which in the end is all of us, either directly or indirectly. We are all in this together.

Delighted to be invited to give my annual talk recently on ‘lifestyle as medicine’ to UCD School of Medicine Students. It is such a privilege for me to be able to influence the thinking of these brilliant young future doctors.
To my surprise, I was told today that this was my 10th year doing this. Time passes so quickly. I believe it is so important to expose the doctors of tomorrow to the science and ideas of how lifestyle habits can prevent and improve so many chronic health conditions.

Some key findings :

Heart Disease : 80% preventable.
Type 2 Diabetes : 80% preventable.
Dementia : 45% preventable.

This is achieveable through a combination of the following:

Exercise & Movement
Restorative Sleep
Good Food
Recharge from Stress
Supportive Relationships
Avoiding Noxious Substances
Time in Nature.

Lifestyle change is powerful.
Medicine is powerful.
Used together, thoughtfully, they are far more effective than either extreme.

It is the synergy of these elements that matters most. Recent research published in the Lancet reveals just how beneficial very small positive tweaks can be, in terms of improving healthspan.

None of us can change the past, but starting today you too can begin to step forward into a healthier more revitalised version of you. Simply start. Your future self will be glad you did.

Sincere gratitude to BobbyKerr & team at 🙏 for our conversation today about my book:

.

Building a bridge between current and future you is a fascinating concept that has really captivated my attention. It can pay rich dividends for your wellbeing, both today ‘in the moment’ as well as later on ‘down the road’.
Perhaps the greatest opportunity is not in the crossing of the bridge to a new destination p***e. Instead to be present on the bridge as the continuous now evolves day by day. Enabling your future self to emerge.
