📍 Most subcutaneous auto-injectors are designed for multiple administration sites, commonly including:
• The abdomen (at least 5cm from the navel)
• The thigh (anterolateral area)
• In some cases, the upper arm (as directed by healthcare providers)
While all approved sites are clinically effective when used as prescribed, patients often report different experiences with each location.
Patients may have varying emotional and psychological responses to different injection sites being certain areas feel more comfortable than others, which can impact their overall treatment experience and adherence.
A study published in Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology of more than 2,000 rheumatoid arthritis patients using an auto-injector showed: https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0nrf8-0
🔹 75% selected the thigh for self-injection
🔹 17% selected the abdomen
🔹 7% selected the upper arm
Factors influencing patient preferences included:
• Visibility and access during the self-injection process
• Individual comfort levels
• Emotional associations with different body areas
