For me … coaching was the missing piece…
I spent over two decades working as a clinical dietitian before I realized that the calories- in, calories - out paradigm was failing me and my clients. My clients are intelligent, motivated women and it just didn't make sense to me why my efforts to help them lose weight didn't result in significant long term change.
When I first learned about Mindful Eating, I felt optimistic that counseling my clients to pay attention to all aspects of their eating experience would help my clients achieve their weight loss goals; surely people would eat less if they paid attention to their hunger and fullness cues... However, even though mindfulness practices (including Mindful Eating) can have huge positive effects on psychological and emotional well-being, my clients continued to struggle with disordered eating patterns.
Intuitive Eating shifted my thinking about diets and dieting. Based on 10 principles which were formulated in the 1990's by two dietitians, Intuitive Eating made me question the validity of the paradigm that I had accepted as truth for my whole life. Perhaps instead of pursuing the endless weight loss diets, we can learn to accept our bodies as they are and work to take care of them? Perhaps health is the result of our behaviors rather than our weight? Perhaps chronic dieting harms our physical and emotional health? Maybe there is a different way?
Intuitive Eating asks us to completely reverse of how we think about food, and how we decide what, when and how much to eat…. instead of looking outwards towards diets, programs, gurus and supplements for answers, we take back our power, turn our attention inward and draw on our innate ability to know what we really need. By taking the moral sting out of food, Intuitive Eating encourages us to eat all foods without remorse or guilt. Making peace with food, allows us to examine how foods make you feel emotionally, physically and spiritually; reestablishing our agency over our bodies and food choices.
As you can imagine, this is easier said than done. Changing your thoughts and beliefs about food and eating can be very challenging. Fortunately, hiring a supportive and effective coach can be very helpful in stream lining this process. A non-diet coach can help you identify your stumbling blocks; the thoughts and beliefs that are holding you back and help you move forward in your journey towards food freedom.
I feel so grateful to have arrived in a place in my journey where I feel I have the tools to really help my clients make peace with food and change their lives for the better. If you are intrigued by the possibility of working with a coach, please contact me for a free consultation. I would love to talk to you about it.
