There are many myths associated with Epilepsy, like it's untreatable or transmitted like infectious disease or people suffering from it are cursed. Even during a seizure episode people try to put things in mouth or put shoes/onions/garlic under nose or try to voluntarily suppress the jerks which are not advisable at all. To remain seizure free regular medications are advised and the medicine must be stopped or tapered off under supervision of the treating doctor only. Currently medications available are quite well tolerated and it also improves quality of life.
