ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF A GRADUATE OPTOMETRIST IN INDIA

A Graduate Optometrist is an independent, autonomous, front-line primary eye-care professional who is clinically trained to examine, diagnose, treat, and manage ocular diseases, visual system disorders, and functional vision problems.
Optometrists possess the competencies required to prescribe medications, perform clinical procedures, and deliver comprehensive eye-care services without supervision.

2. Core Clinical Responsibilities
2.1 Comprehensive Eye Examination
• Conduct detailed assessment of visual acuity, binocular vision, and functional vision.
• Perform ocular health evaluation using diagnostic equipment (slit lamp, tonometry, ophthalmoscopy, retinoscopy, OCT interpretation, etc.).
• Identify refractive errors, accommodative issues, and ocular motility disorders.
2.2 Diagnosis of Ocular Diseases
• Diagnose anterior and posterior segment disorders such as:
o Conjunctivitis
o Keratitis
o Uveitis
o Dry eye disease
o Glaucoma (early detection & monitoring)
o Diabetic retinopathy & hypertensive retinopathy
o Age-related conditions (cataract, AMD)
• Interpret clinical tests and imaging reports.

3. Therapeutic & Prescribing Responsibilities
3.1 Medication Prescription
Optometrists with recognized clinical training are competent to prescribe medications for:
• Ocular infections (antibiotics, antivirals)
• Inflammatory conditions (steroids, NSAIDs)
• Allergic eye diseases (antihistamines, mast-cell stabilizers)
• Glaucoma (IOP-lowering medications)
• Dry eye & ocular surface disorders
• Myopia control therapy
• Pain management related to ocular pathology
3.2 Clinical Procedures
• Foreign body removal
• Lacrimal irrigation
• Punctal plug insertion
• Gonioscopy
• Contact lens-related clinical intervention

• Spectacles, therapeutic lenses, low vision devices

• Assessment, device prescription, training, and rehabilitation plans for partially sighted individuals.

• Implement vision-related public health programs including NPCB, RBSK, and school vision screening.

Optometrists maintain collaborative relationships with ophthalmologists and other health professionals by:
• Referring advanced pathological cases requiring surgical or tertiary care.
