BUILDING FAMILIES THROUGH SURROGACY

A couple married for 19 years were living together intimately all these years. But they could not conceive and get a baby child. They have done number of IVF treatments, at many centers all over India. The wife is having severe endomitosis . They were working abroad. Whenever they come to India for holidays, the entire days were purely utilized for medical treatments to conceive. But in spite of several procedures she could not conceive. They come to India for one month holiday, every year. After spending their one month holiday for treatment they go back to abroad for work. Again, they come next year spend their time money and energy and go back without getting any desired results. And this has become a routine process of their life.
On 2019 also the couple again came India for their holiday to have their routine treatment procedures. Because of the repeated failures in treatment for severe endomitosis , they finally decided to go for surrogacy under my treatment. But unfortunately, during this holiday the husband met with an accident, just 3-4 days prior to their departure. The accident was so severe, that the husband fell into the coma state and was surviving with the help of a ventilator. It went on for a period of 2-3 months since the accident.
Meanwhile the surrogacy treatment was on and embryos were Frogen and I was just holding it back waiting for the husband’s recovery. She was a wife who sacrificed her entire life just to be with her husband. She left her job, given up everything in her life, just to look after her ill-fated husband. Her situation was so painful.
One day she approached me and request me to transfer the available embryos to the surrogated mother. She told me that she will not be able survive if she could not get a baby child sooner, as she is on a verge of loosing her life partner and feeling severely lonely in life, all of a sudden. So, I immediately decided to transfer the embryos to the surrogated mother without further delay.
Meantime she was taking her husband to places where ever she could get the best neuro treatment for him. Slowly the husband came out of danger. He was out of the life threatening situation. Even though his body was recovering in a faster pace, his neuro health was not that better. He could not regain his full conscious. Still he could realize what is happening around him with his mild consciousness. As time progressed the husband could get out of the bed and were able move with the help of a wheel chair.
Days passed and the surrogated mother delivered a baby for the couple. Even though the husband could realize the good news, he could not express his emotions in full. But even amidst of all these miseries the wife was overwhelmed about the child’s birth. I also felt extremely happy that I could be a part of this happy episode in the life of the couple.

Dear Friends,

Today, I would like to narrate a story of motherhood, a very touching and heart-warming story about my patient couple. I felt this case like really inspiring and touching among all the life stories I witnessed in my 25 years of medical profession. In fact, it is not only a story of motherhood, but also can be taken as a warming story of a married couple or grandparents. So, let me start.

A couple, who were married for 12 years, were not fortunate enough to get blessed with a baby child, in the natural due course. They were trying all the possible methods of getting pregnant. Consulted several doctors and underwent several medical treatments like UI, IVF etc., also. But they could not find a desired positive result. After a series of failures, they approached me.

In the initial stages of the consultation with me, the husband seemed to be very motivated to get a child. But, since he was coming alone, without bringing his wife, to take my consultation, I did not feel that much confidence, about the quality of their married life, the warmth of their relationship as husband and wife and to be frank, I doubted how long they could get along with their married life.

Still, I decided to continue my consultation for the husband. Even with several apprehensions the consultation lasted for 3 years. Since he used to visit me without his wife, every time in these long 3 years, my doubts about their personal relationship mounted and I was confused whether to advance my treatment methods, on the husband, alone. Usually, I do not go ahead with my treatments if I lack the confidence in my patients. My motto is to build or retain a family through surrogacy and to make a married couple live happily ever after, with their children.

After 3 years, one fine day, to my very surprise, the husband brought his wife to me, for the consultation. Since then they started taking my consultation together. In the meantime, the father of the husband also started visiting me, along with the couple. To another bigger surprise, one day, the father locked my consultation room doors and started pleading me, to help him, have a grandchild, at any cost. And told me that the only wish he have for the rest of his life, is to have a grandchild. He also told me that he may not survive for a longer time in his life, if he had to continue like this, without having a grandchild. Even my patient-couple was in similar mindset.

Then I got the clear idea about how much the whole family is raring to go to have a baby in their family. I understood that a baby is a must for the couple to get along with their married life. Then I decided to advance, with my procedure and finally I could arrange a surrogate mother. Even after getting the things done with a surrogate mother, I had doubts that being an entrepreneur couple, how long these couple could follow my advices and instructions, strictly. But I decided to move forward with all the possible methods. And as time passed the foetus started growing, as expected. It was 8 months for the surrogated mother, when suddenly the outbreak of Covid-19 happened. The pandemic situation contributed further, to make my tasks even tedious as the couple were not able to travel and visit me, to have routine procedures, which were inevitable in frequent intervals, as a result of the lockdown and travel restrictions, due to Covid-19 outbreak.

Finally, after 34 weeks of getting conceived the surrogated mother started getting surrogate movements. While we were expecting the baby inside her, to get naturally matured, in the rest of the weeks to follow, suddenly she started leaking. There was no way other than to go for an emergency delivery. Fortunately, it all went fine, even though the baby was delivered prematurely, 2 weeks in advance. Since it was a premature delivery, we had to keep the baby in ICU.

After the birth of the baby I really understood how much the wife was wanting to be have a motherhood. Without my knowledge she arranged 2 boxes of natural milk from her native place, to feed the baby in the ICU. She forgot about her wellbeing, lost her appetite, she just wanted to focus only on taking care of her baby. She even went to a level of psychosis, as a result of the outburst of her motherly emotions. The couple were feeling that 24 hours a day is not sufficient for them, to take care of their baby. They were constantly looking at their baby, enjoying each and every movement and gestures the baby was making.

Whenever I contacted them to check the wellbeing of the couple and their baby, the wife used to cry repeatedly, saying that how much she suffered inside, for the last 12 years, since her marriage, wishing for a baby child. She even attributed her premature delivery as god’s blessing of sending her baby, 2 weeks earlier, to her. As a doctor, I was so happy to be a part of one’s life-time wish. Her in-laws also were feeling at cloud9, after getting their grandchild.

They invited me to come down to their native place to have get-together with their family members, but I fondly refused to accept the invitation, so as to avoid personal meeting in this pandemic situation. For the couple the lockdown and travel restriction came as a blessing, as they could spend maximum time with their baby, in a day, without bothering about their profession and business. This overall episode made me feel like anything and I thank god for giving me an opportunity to serve people like this, as part of my profession, which, I consider, is one of the most noble professions, in the world, today.
