What is an example of an incomplete fracture?

The most famous type of incomplete fracture is called a Greenstick Fracture. It’s a partial fracture of one of the long bones of the arm. It is a partial fracture of the bone that does not extend all the way through.

A greenstick fracture occurs when a bone bends and breaks, but doesn’t break into two separate pieces. It’s called by this name because it looks similar to what happens when you try to break a “green” branch from a tree. It also goes by the term “partial fracture.”

This occurs in children because their bones are still growing and still flexible. The bone flexes slightly and cracks only on one side.
It can be particularly hard to identify on xray unless you’re skilled radiologist.

How many bones are there in a backbone?

Even though there typically were 33 bones that form the vertebral column embryologically (7 cervicals, 12 thoracics, 5 lumbers, 5 sacrals, and 4 coccygeals), because of fusion of the 5 sacrals into a single sacrum and fusion of the 4 coccygeals into a single coccyx, the best answer is in the adult there are 26 bones that form the vertebral column.

Why don’t doctors cut you when they saw off your cast?

The typical circular saw spins a blade which allows the teeth of the blade to shear the material being cut. The cast saw oscillates back and forth rapidly which causes the fiberglass to crack. Lots of people like to say that these saws are therefore incapable of cutting skin. Well, that is not true. It can cut skin if plunged in too deeply which is why the person in the above photograph is holding it that way.

The saw can also generate pretty high friction which generates heat and can cause burns so training is important. Finally, there is usually thick padding underneath the fiberglass which serves as a barrier as well to cutting the skin.
