Moods are not just phases you can switch on and off. For those living with Bipolar Disorder, emotional highs and lows can be intense, unpredictable, and deeply overwhelming.

On World Bipolar Day, we raise awareness about understanding, early recognition, and compassionate care. Bipolar Disorder is a mental health condition that can be effectively managed with the right diagnosis, treatment, and support system.

Let’s replace stigma with empathy, and silence with support. Because mental health deserves attention, understanding, and care.

Does smoking affect only certain age groups or is it dangerous for everyone?

In Episode 2 of Lung Health awareness series, Dr. Don Jose K, Consultant, Department of Minimal Access Surgery, discusses how smoking impacts people across all age groups and genders. While earlier studies often associated lung diseases primarily with men, recent trends show an increasing number of women affected due to rising smoking habits.

Smoking damages the lungs over time, sometimes to the extent that patients require preparation and treatment before undergoing lung-related surgeries. The effects are not limited to one demographic, both young and older individuals can face serious respiratory complications.

The message is clear: avoiding smoking is one of the most important steps you can take to protect not only your health, but also the well-being of those around you.

Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy is a type of epilepsy commonly seen in children above 10 years, especially in girls.

Dr. Parthasarathy, Consultant, Department of Neurology, explains that it often begins with sudden muscle jerks, usually after waking up. This may appear as objects slipping from the hand due to brief twitches. These episodes can worsen with lack of sleep and may progress into more serious seizures if ignored.

The good news is that this condition is treatable when identified early. Delayed treatment can lead to frequent seizures, long-term brain impact, and even refractory epilepsy where medications may no longer be effective.

Diagnosis through MRI or EEG tests is essential. Some patients may need short-term medication, while others may require long-term treatment. Early intervention can prevent complications and reduce the risk of accidents.

Don’t ignore the signs. Early care can make all the difference.

Epilepsy is caused by a sudden surge of abnormal electrical activity in the brain, leading to seizures that affect behaviour, movement, awareness, or sensation.

Seizures can vary from mild confusion or staring spells to severe shaking, loss of consciousness, and loss of body control.

Generalized seizures may cause sudden collapse and convulsions, while focal seizures can lead to sensory changes, confusion, or repetitive movements with or without loss of awareness

Dr. Joseph Shibu, Consultant – Interventional Neurology, also addresses common myths- epilepsy is not due to possession, and practices like placing objects in the hand do not help.
With modern medicines and treatments, epilepsy is safe to manage even for pregnant women. Causes may vary from genetic factors in childhood to hormonal or tumour-related conditions in adults.

Epilepsy is a controllable condition. Early consultation and the right diagnosis can make all the difference.

How can we protect our lungs and prevent lung diseases before they begin?

In Episode 1 of Lung Health awareness series, Dr. Don Jose K, Consultant, Department of Minimal Access Surgery, shares practical steps to help keep your lungs healthy. Simple precautions like wearing masks in crowded places, especially for individuals with low immunity, diabetes, hypertension, or age-related conditions, can reduce the risk of airborne infections.

Equally important is avoiding smoking and va**ng. While va**ng is often believed to be less harmful, it can still damage lung health and is increasingly restricted in many countries.
Protecting your lungs starts with everyday choices. Prevention today can help ensure healthier breathing for years to come.
