🎉 Many congratulations to Dr. Ashish Verma, former Ph.D. student from CEMS, IMS-BHU, who worked under the supervision of Dr. Vibhav Gautam, for publishing the final part of his PhD thesis work in the prestigious journal Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group).

The study titled “Phytosphingosine, a sphingolipid isolated from fungal endophyte Penicillium oxalicum, exerts cytotoxic effects against breast cancer cells and shows blood compatibility” reports the purification and structural identification of Phytosphingosine with promising anti-breast cancer activity.

This work was supported by funding under the IoE Seed Grant to Dr. Vibhav Gautam. Congratulations also to Ph.D. students Ms. Swati Singh, Ms. Priyamvada Gupta, Ms. Harsh*ta Tiwari, and faculty collaborators Prof. M.K. Bharty (Department of Chemistry, I.Sc. BHU) and Dr. Lalit Kumar (Department of Urology, IMS-BHU) for their valuable contributions.

Mr. Rahul Tiwari, a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Rajiv Kumar at the Centre of Experimental Medicine and Surgery (CEMS), IMS-BHU, is currently undertaking a two-month research training at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Brisbane, Australia. His work focuses on a murine model of visceral leishmaniasis to study the longevity of immune responses. In addition, he is receiving advanced training in multi-colour flow cytometry, R programming, and the Olink proteomics platform. This international collaboration is expected to further strengthen translational research capacity in immunology and leishmaniasis at CEMS.

A delegation of eight Vietnamese scientists visited the Centre of Experimental Medicine and Surgery (CEMS), IMS-BHU, where they interacted with faculty, research scholars, students, and staff, and explored advanced facilities in nanobiotechnology, molecular oncology, drug delivery, proteomics, immunology, and phytomedicine. They also reviewed the animal research facilities, imaging infrastructure, and specialized laboratories, gaining valuable insights into the diverse research activities at BHU.

The delegates met Prof. S.N. Sankhwar, Director, IMS-BHU, and discussed the institute’s ongoing research programs and infrastructural strengths. They further explored the International Centre of BHU, Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL), Central Discovery Centre, and SATHI-BHU, where cutting-edge scientific instruments and projects were showcased.

Discussions focused on future collaborations, student exchanges under the ASEAN Fellowship Program, and formalizing partnerships through MoUs between BHU and Vietnamese national universities. The visit underscored CEMS as a key hub for international academic and research partnerships at IMS-BHU.

The program was coordinated by Dr. Vibhav Gautam, Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Dr. Santosh Kumar Singh, and Prof. Sanjeev Kumar Gupta (Professor In-Charge, CEMS), with valuable support from Prof. Akhilesh Kumar Singh.

Congratulations to Dr. Samer Singh, Assistant Professor at CEMS, Institute of Medical Sciences, for representing Banaras Hindu University in the capstone Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study that appeared in the July 19th issue of LANCET (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(25)01037-2). The study titled “Global, regional, and national trends in routine childhood vaccination coverage from 1980 to 2023 with forecasts to 2030: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023” is authored by the “GBD 2023 Vaccine Coverage Collaborators.” The study presents an updated picture of global childhood vaccine coverage and highlights obstacles in achieving the desired level of zero-dose children by 2030, especially in the global south countries, like India, Nigeria, Congo, etc.

Congratulations to Ms. Harsh*ta Tiwari, Ph.D. scholar (DBT-JRF) at the Centre of Experimental Medicine and Surgery (CEMS), Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, on her selection as a Non-Graduating Research Ph.D. Student for a short-term research project.

Ms. Harsh*ta Tiwari, who is pursuing her doctoral studies under the supervision of Dr. Vibhav Gautam, is currently working on the project titled “High-content analysis of a novel biocompatible nanoparticle formulation for breast cancer.” As part of this work, she will be conducting a portion of her research at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (QS World Ranking: 15).

We wish her continued success in her academic and research endeavors.

Congratulations to Ms. Swati Singh for winning the first prize in the poster presentation at the Workshop on Computational Oncology: Integrating Experiments and Computational Models (WoCON-2024), held on December 17-18, 2024. The workshop was jointly organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi, and the Param Hansa Centre for Computational Oncology (PHCCO) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Swati Singh is a PhD scholar under the guidance of Dr. Vibhav Gautam at the CEMS.
