Vastu Shastra For Swimming Pool :

Swimming pool, underground water tank, wells, bore-well etc. should be constructed in the north-east, east towards Ishan and north towards ishan where only these directions are auspicious, so many says that for constructing of swimming pool is very difficult at houses, but there is a very good option for placing the swimming pool at house.

The North-east corner is the best place for swimming pool, in some cases the northeast corner may not be possible for the swimming pool, then they are searching for the another portion at their house, for them here is the answer. Construct the swimming pool at East side or at north side.if the swimming pool is placed like those places like northeast to east side and northeast to north side, then the inmates of the house will have all good fortunes. The slope inside at swimming pool should be starts from west to east if the swimming pool is located at north side and south to north if the swimming pool located at east side finally nairuthi to Ishan corners if the swimming pool located at Ishan corner of the site.

Planning on building a swim pool? The shape and size of your swimming pool should be determined according to the type of usage the pool will get:
A purely recreational pool needs a large shallow area and any shape will do.
A pool built for swimming laps should have a long, straight section with parallel ends.
If you want to make swimming a part of your daily workout but have limited room in your backyard, a swim spa might be the best option for you.
How to Choose Swimming Pool Size and Depth

Recreational swimming pool users, particularly children, don’t require great depth and it is adequate to provide a sloped floor which goes from a minimum depth of 36 inches to a maximum of 4 or 5 feet. A purely recreational pool also does not need to be any particular shape, so you can pick a shape to complement your lot.

On the other hand, athletic lap swimmers need a long and narrow space with at least 4-5 feet depth throughout, to avoid touching the bottom while swimming, and to ensure that turns at the pool’s ends can be executed safely. For competitive swimmers in training, providing a length of 25 yards or 25 meters will enable them to develop a swimming style usable in competition.

It is possible to accommodate both recreational and athletic needs by having a hybrid shape and depth, like an “L” shaped pool, where the shallow, short leg is large enough for fun and games while the longer leg is designed for lap swimmers.

Further options to consider are provision of a diving area or water slide, and a wading area for small children. While diving boards and water slides are popular there is considerable debate regarding the required depth and diving well size for optimal safety. Consider the depth factor carefully with your swimming pool contractor. You may choose to forgo the idea altogether to avoid tempting untrained people, particularly children, from participating in these inherently risky activities.

A wading pool, on the other hand, is relatively safe, but small kids will quickly outgrow it and join the rest of the family in the main pool. A reasonable alternative is to build a separate wading pool that can later be converted into a spa.

Choosing the Best Swim Pool Shape for Your Back Yard

Simple geometric shapes (squares, rectangles, circles, and ovals) are the best for complementing a landscaped setting and enhancing the appearance of your property. These are the types of pools generally found in suburban neighborhoods. On average a rectangular swimming pool is more expensive than a curve shaped swimming pool as some builders price based on the perimeter of the swimming pool.

It is difficult to incorporate unusual pool shapes, particularly on residential lots, as they tend to compete with and overwhelm the rest of the landscape. However, odd shapes, like a bend in one side of a pool, may also be used to integrate natural features of your property, like special trees or boulders.

Install a Sufficient Patio around the Swimming Pool

When drawing up swim pool building plans, make sure to include extra space around the pool for a deck or paved area surrounding all sides of the pool. The poolside area provides easy access to the pool (which is particularly important from a water safety perspective), minimizes the amount of dirt entering the water and catches overspills which would otherwise cause the garden to becoming water logged.

As a rule of thumb, the total poolside area should be about equal to the pool, and should be at least 5-8 feet wide. Remember to include a safety fence around the outside of the patio, too.

For any pool construction job, be sure to spend a lot of time in the planning phase. Errors and changes will be costly to resolve during and after the actual construction project.

How to Save Water in Your Pool
1. Turn Down the Thermostat If you have a heated pool, lower the temperature a few degrees. The hotter the water, the more it evaporates away.
2. Get a pool cover Pool covers reduce evaporation by 30 to 50% and will warm the pool naturally.
3. Plant a Windbreak Wind whipping across the surface of the pool will remove water from the pool. A windbreak can help you conserve water as well as energy costs.
4. Check for Leaks A leaky swimming pool can waste over 100,000 gallons of water per year. Learn how to check for leaks in your swimming pool.
5. Pool Filters Keep filters clean to prevent backwash. If there is backwashed water, use it on your lawn or elsewhere. (Chemicals in the pool may damage some plants. Keep that in mind.) Keeping your pool clean will reduce stress on the filter.
6. Horseplay Horseplay and splashing will waste water. I personally enjoy horseplay, roughhousing and shenanigans. But horseplay does waste water. Knocking it off will save water.

There's a big source of water consumption in your backyard -- it's called a swimming pool. While the World Water Council is not asking you to replace that big pit with a vegetable garden -- not yet, anyway -- there are several ways you can practice water conservation with your pool or spa. Get smart -- water smart -- by learning more about your pool or spa and the preventative steps you can take and repairs you can make to help conserve water. Do your part to reduce and control water losses from pools and spas. Here's how:
Use a Pool Cover
Without a swimming pool cover, more than half the water in your pool can possibly evaporate in one year. Using a cover regularly reduces evaporation by 90 to 95%. Without a cover, an 18'x36' pool loses about 1 inch of water per week in the summer. Annually, this can add up to a water loss of 7,000 gallons. What a waste. Other benefits of a pool cover:
A pool cover can reduce the need to use more chemicals.
Pool covers help to reduce algae growth.
Pool covers help conserve heat, which can save money for heating costs.

To help protect your children from drowning in a backyard pool, the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly suggests the following swimming pool rules for improved safety. These apply to in-ground, above-ground, and portable (soft-sided) pools. Go over these swimming pool rules regularly with your kids and with visitors.

Never leave your children alone in or near the swimming pool, even for a moment. An adult who knows CPR should actively supervise children at all times.

Practice touch supervision with children younger than 5 years old. This means that the adult is within an arm's length of the child at all times.

Put up a fence to separate your house from the swimming pool. Most young children who drown in pools wander out of the house and fall into the pool. Install a fence at least 4 feet high around all 4 sides of the pool. Do not use a chain-link fence (kids can climb them easily). Use gates that self-close and self-latch, with latches higher than your children's reach.

Pool alarms and rigid pool covers offer additional protection, but a fence is still essential.

Keep rescue equipment (such as a shepherd's hook or life preserver) and a telephone by the pool. Choose rescue equipment made of fiberglass or other materials that do not conduct electricity.

Do not use air-filled "swimming aids" or floaties as a substitute for approved life vests. These may give both children and adults a false sense of security.

Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren't tempted to reach for them.

After children are done swimming, secure the pool so they can't get back into it.

A power safety cover that meets the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) may add to the protection of your children but should not be used in place of the fence between your house and the pool.

Water awareness and swim lessons are important, but not sufficient to protect your child from drowning.

Stay Healthy And Fit With These Pool Exercises

Experts will tell you that swimming is one of the best exercises you can do. Some of the benefits include improved strength and flexibility, a stronger heart, increased energy, improved circulation, weight loss and stress relief. Swimming is just one of many water exercises you can do at home.

Stay fit this summer with these simple water exercises:

Kicks: Grab a kickboard, or hold onto the edge of the pool, and kick to tone your legs, buttocks and stomach.
Running: Increase your heart rate by running in the water. Be sure you’re in chest-high water, and begin by running with your hands on your head. As you become more experienced, try paddling with your arms. You can also try walking or jogging in water.
Bobbing: Improve breathing and muscle tone by bobbing up and down in the water.
Tread Water: You can improve arm and leg strength simply by treading water.
Yoga: Improve your flexibility and strength while relaxing with gentle yoga movements. Try purchasing a water yoga DVD to learn specific exercises and workouts.
Leg Lifts: Hold onto the side of the pool, and life each leg 10 times behind you, in front of you and to the side. This will help to condition your legs, buttocks and stomach.
Pull-Ups: Strengthen your back, shoulders and arms with pull-ups. Hold onto the side of the pool and lower your body as much as possible. Keep your knees bent, exhale and pull yourself up as high as you can.

Remember to check with your physician or trainer before beginning a new workout program. And don’t forget that you can become dehydrated in the pool, so make sure you drink water before and after working out.

What You Need To Do To Prepare Your Pool For The New Swimming Season

If it's almost summer, then backyard BBQ's and pool parties are just around the corner! Now you've got to think about preparing your pool for use after the winter months. Seem like a chore? It doesn't have to be... especially if you have taken good care of your pool during its hiatus. Here's a checklist that will help you make sure your pool is ready when summer rolls around.

Pool Opening Checklist

1. SUPPLIES

Sort through all pool supplies. Throw away those that are in poor condition.
Check the date on chemicals and replace items that have passed their expiration.

2. COVER AND DECK

Pump, hose, or sweep away water, dirt, or debris from the pool cover and then do the same for the pool deck.
Carefully remove the cover and clean it. NOTE: Proper cover removal helps keep the pool relatively clear. Allow the cover to dry to prevent mildew and then fold and store it for the summer.
Reinstall deck ladders, diving board, and other deck fittings. NOTE: The remainder of the petroleum jelly used to coat exposed metal fittings will need to be wiped clean with a terry cloth towel. Lubricate all bolts on the dive board, ladders, or rails.
If the pool water is low, bring it up to normal.

3. EQUIPMENT

Reinstall or reassemble the pump, filter, and other removed items.
Raise the underwater lights from the bottom of the pool and install them in their niches.
Have the heater professionally serviced before you use it.
Remove the plugs and replace return outlet fittings.
Check for leaks and proper operation.

4. ELECTRICAL

Restore circuit breakers, switches, and the time clock trippers to normal operating positions.
Turn on the electric power and start up the support system.

5. WATER CLEANING AND CHEMISTRY

Super chlorinate, or “shock” the pool. Test the pH and total alkalinity and adjust the levels. NOTE: Be sure to check the levels frequently during the first few days until they stabilize.
Restart the circulation equipment to further clean the pool. Run the circulation system 24 hours straight for the first three days or until the water has cleared completely. NOTE: Don’t forget to backwash the filter frequently during this time.
Vacuum out any debris from the bottom. Retest the water. Treat the water with an algaecide. Do not go into the pool until the water is crystal clear and the chlorine level is under 2.0 ppm.

5 Great Pool Party Ideas

What better way to enjoy a warm summer evening than to throw a party in your own backyard! Next time you invite your friends and family over for a swim, try one of these fun and unique party themes.

Hawaiian Luau
Turn your backyard into a tropical paradise! Play Hawaiian music in the background and have your guests dress in Hawaiian shirts or grass skirts. Welcome them with homemade leis or seashell necklaces, and decorate with bright tropical colors. You can create the ambiance of a tropical island by putting up tiki torches and scattering tropical flowers on the tables. For dinner, grill up some skewers with chicken, pineapple and veggies, or treat your guests to an authentic pig roast. To top off your magical evening, serve tropical drinks and beverages in cups made of hollowed-out half coconuts. And don’t forget to play a few games like the limbo or a hula dance contest.

Movie Night
In memory of the good old fashioned drive-in movie theatres, try hosting movie night in your own backyard with a “float-in”! Fill your pool with inflatable lounge chairs and inner-tubes. Then, move your big-screen TV outside or rent a projector and screen for the night. Pick a new release to watch, or try “Finding Nemo” for the kids. Don’t forget to serve movie snacks! Buttered popcorn, nachos, soda and candy are always a hit!

Romantic
Invite your “special someone” for a romantic evening by the pool, or invite a few couples over for a party under the stars. Fill your pool with floating candles and rose petals, and line the edges of the pool with tea lights. You can also hang strands of white lights from the trees. Don’t forget to set the mood with some romantic music. Instead of serving dinner, set up a chocolate fondue fountain with fresh fruit.

Mexican Fiesta
Try out this fun and easy party theme! Line your pool with Mexican blankets and sombreros, and set up small tables with paper flowers as the centerpieces. Hang a candy-filled piñata from a tree and invite guests to take a swing. You can also set up a backyard dance floor and hire a dance instructor to give Salsa lessons. For dinner, grill up fajitas on the barbeque and serve with sour cream and guacamole…and of course chips and salsa!

Beach Party
Why make a long drive to the beach when your very own pool serves as the perfect centerpiece for a backyard beach party? Use sea shells and beach umbrellas to decorate the backyard, and cover the grass with bright colored towels and giant beach balls. Throw some balls into the pool too, or float some toy boats in the water. Heat up the barbeque and grill hotdogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers. Serve with corn on the cob, potato salad and fresh-squeezed lemonade…and popsicles for dessert!

07/10/2013

You can't be too safe when it comes to pool safety. According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional death worldwide. Many things may be done to prevent injury and death when swimming in a pool, and one of these is to ensure that you have access to the right swimming pool safety equipment.
Safety Lines and Flotation Devices

Use a safety line or rope in a pool to separate the shallow end of the pool from the deep end. These are hooked to the edges of a swimming pool and float above the water so that people who can't swim in the deep water are aware of their boundaries.

Flotation devices are safety equipment that include life vests, or jackets, and ring buoys. A life vest should fit tightly around the person wearing it to prevent it from slipping off. A ring buoy is used in case you need to help someone out of the pool. It is a flotation device with a long rope attached to it, which should at least be as long as the width of the pool. It's thrown to a person in need of it so that she can hang on and be pulled to safety.
Reaching Pole and Telephone

A reaching pole with a double blunt-end crook is similar to a ring buoy as they serve the same purpose. Ideally, a reaching pole should be at least 12-feet long.

Keep a cordless telephone nearby in case you need to make a call during an emergency. In residential pools, having a phone outside and near the pool is important so you don't waste valuable time having to run inside your home to get to a telephone.
Pool Fence and Net

Install a pool fence at least 4-feet high around your swimming pool to prevent children from entering the pool. Ensure that the fence's spacing is small enough so that kids can't slip through the fence. The Red Cross recommends that the fence is equipped with a self-closing, self-latching gate that you can lock. Additionally, you may want to install safety pool nets or pool covers to prevent children from drowning if they accidentally fall in the pool.
Alarms and First-aid Kit

Alarms may be used for both your pool and for the gate around your pool. A pool alarm sounds off when it detects that someone has fallen into the water, and a gate alarm sounds when the gate is opened. You also should have a first-aid kit in case of emergency, and, if possible, always have someone around who knows how to perform lifesaving CPR.
