Physiology / Principle of X-ray
X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation with very short wavelength and high energy.
When X-rays pass through the human body, different tissues absorb X-rays differently.
This difference in absorption creates the X-ray image.
How different tissues appear on X-ray
Bone (calcium-rich) → absorbs most X-rays → appears white
Soft tissues (muscle, fat) → absorb some X-rays → appear grey
Air (lungs, gas) → absorbs very few X-rays → appears black
Metal / contrast media → absorbs maximum → very bright white
Image formation process
X-ray tube produces X-ray photons
X-rays pass through the body
Tissues absorb X-rays according to density
Remaining X-rays reach the detector / film
Image is formed based on absorption pattern
Purpose of X-ray
Detect fractures
Check joint alignment
Identify bone diseases
See foreign bodies

Lumbar vertebrae (L1–L5): Five large vertebral bodies forming the lower part of the spine.
Vertebral bodies: Appear rectangular and aligned one above the other.
Intervertebral disc spaces: Seen between each vertebra, allowing flexibility and movement.
Spinous processes: Central bony projections seen in the midline on AP view.
Transverse processes: Side projections of each vertebra.
Facet joints: Seen mainly on lateral view, helping in spinal stability.
Sacrum: Triangular bone below L5 forming the base of the spine.
Pelvic bones (iliac wings): Visible on the lower part of the AP view.
Normal lumbar curvature (lordosis): Seen on the lateral view.

Soft snow falls on a quiet road,
trees standing bare but brave under winter’s weight.
The world feels hushed, wrapped in white and calm,
where cold air carries peace and every step slows time. ❄️🌲

X-ray Description (Ankle – AP View):
This is an AP (antero-posterior) view X-ray of the ankle joint.
The distal tibia and fibula are visualized.
The ankle joint mortise appears maintained.
No obvious acute fracture line or gross dislocation is clearly visible on this single view.
The medial and lateral malleoli outlines look intact.

This is a lateral (side view) X-ray of the lumbar spine.
The area marked with the red circle shows reduced intervertebral disc space between the lumbar vertebrae. There are degenerative changes, likely due to disc degeneration (lumbar spondylosis). The vertebral bodies appear slightly compressed at the disc level, which can be associated with chronic wear and tear.
Such findings may correlate with lower back pain, stiffness, or nerve-related symptoms, depending on clinical presentation.

This is a Chest X-ray (PA view). Below is the anatomy visible on a normal chest X-ray, explained simply 👇
Bony structures
Clavicles (collar bones) – curved bones at the top
Ribs – seen as curved white lines on both sides
Scapulae (shoulder blades) – outer upper sides
Thoracic vertebrae – vertical bones in the midline behind the heart
Airways
Trachea – dark vertical air column in the center
Carina – point where trachea divides (usually at T4–T5)
Right & Left main bronchi
Lungs
Right lung – 3 lobes (upper, middle, lower)
Left lung – 2 lobes (upper, lower)
Lung fields – appear dark (air-filled)
Vascular markings – fine branching lines
Heart & Mediastinum
Cardiac shadow – mainly on the left side
Right heart border – formed by right atrium
Left heart border – formed by left ventricle
Mediastinum – central soft tissue area
Diaphragm
Right hemidiaphragm – slightly higher
Left hemidiaphragm
Costophrenic angles – sharp angles at lung bases
Abdominal structures
Gastric air bubble – below left diaphragm
