Mouth Opening Exercises
It is important to do mouth opening exercises after undergoing the surgery for cancer of mouth. Simple method of exercising involves keeping the thumb of one hand on the upper teeth and index finger of the other hand over lower teeth and force the jaw open by applying pressure on the teeth.

Heister Mouth Gag can be bought online on Amazon. It is better to wrap an electrical insulation tape over the tips of the gag so teeth do not come in contact with metal directly. Place the tips of the gag as far posteriorly as possible on the nonoperated side of the mouth and open by rotating the key, till slight pain is felt. Do not place it between the front teeth as these teeth are not very strong to tolerate the forces generated by the gag. Maintain the open position for half a minute and then take rest of one minute. Repeat for 10 times, which completes one session. At least five such sessions are to be done in a day.
