Is PET-CT done only when cancer is confirmed?

This is a common misconception.

While PET-CT gained prominence in oncology, its clinical applications extend far beyond cancer diagnosis and staging. Initially developed to evaluate brain function, PET-CT continues to play a crucial role in assessing neurological conditions.

Today, it is also widely used to:
* Identify hidden sources of infection in patients with prolonged fever
* Evaluate unexplained, persistent weight loss
* Assess cardiac viability
* Diagnose and monitor conditions such as cardiac sarcoidosis

PET-CT is a powerful functional imaging tool that helps clinicians detect metabolic changes early often before structural changes become visible.

Understanding its broader applications enables timely diagnosis, accurate treatment planning, and improved patient outcomes.

Are Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy the same?

Many people assume they are identical but they are fundamentally different treatment approaches.

Targeted therapy focuses on specific receptors expressed by cancer cells. It is receptor-oriented and organ-specific. For example, in certain breast cancers, therapies are designed to specifically target the HER2 receptor, leading to more precise and effective treatment outcomes.

Immunotherapy, on the other hand, works by stimulating the body’s immune system to fight cancer more broadly. It is not receptor-specific or organ-oriented in the same way targeted therapy is.

Understanding these differences is essential for making informed treatment decisions. Every cancer is unique — and so is its treatment approach.

Vaccines don’t just prevent infections some can prevent cancer too.

Certain viral infections, when persistent or untreated, can increase the risk of developing cancer over time. The good news? Some of these cancers are preventable through timely vaccination.

🔹 HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination helps prevent cervical cancer.
🔹 Hepatitis B vaccination helps prevent hepatocellular (liver) cancer.
🔹 Vaccination is most effective before exposure to the virus.

Vaccines work by strengthening your immune system to fight infections before they cause long-term damage.

When it comes to cancer, prevention truly is the most powerful treatment we have. Speak to your doctor about cancer-preventive vaccines for you and your family.

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that affects children from birth.

Every year, nearly 10,000–15,000 children in India are born with thalassemia, a condition where the body cannot produce enough healthy hemoglobin. This can lead to anemia, fatigue, and delayed growth if not identified early.

Early awareness plays a key role in timely diagnosis and better management. Recognising the signs can help parents seek medical advice without delay.

Cancer care goes beyond treating the disease it also means caring for the mind.

In this conversation, Pavithra Chellaiyan, Psycho-Oncologist at MGM Cancer Institute, highlights the importance of mental health in cancer care. Evidence shows that nearly one-third of cancer patients experience significant psychological distress, which, if left unaddressed, can impact well-being, quality of life, treatment adherence, and recovery.

By integrating mental health support into oncology care through early distress screening and timely psychological intervention patients can experience better coping, reduced emotional burden, and improved overall outcomes.

Because healing is not just physical.
It is emotional, psychological, and deeply human.
