In his early days in Shirdi, a village in Maharashtra, Sai Baba, a revered spiritual master, loved to keep lamps burning all night.

One day, the local grocers grew tired of giving him free oil. They rudely told him they had none. Baba didn't argue. He returned to his place, took his earthen jars, and filled them with plain water. He drank a few drops. He prayed. Then he poured the water into the lamps.

The grocers had followed him to mock him. But what they witnessed left them speechless. The wicks caught fire. They burned brightly all night long. Water had become oil.

This miracle was the first sign to the villagers that this man was no ordinary man. He was divine.
