World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated all over the world every year from 1 to 7 August in order to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies and mothers. The theme for the year 2017 is "Sustaining Breastfeeding Together"
There are many benefits to breast-feeding for the baby and the mother. Mother’s milk contains all the nutrients in the right proportion that is suitable for the baby to grow well. But infant formula is made from cow's milk. This cannot be compared with the mother’s milk. Breastfed babies have less chance of getting diarrhoea , constipation, vomiting , eczema, chest and ear infections. Research says that breast fed children do not develop obesity , type 2 diabetes and other illnesses later in life when compared with their non-breast fed counterparts . On the other hand breastfeeding mothers have low risk of getting breast and ovarian cancer. Breast feeding can help to build a strong bond between the mother and the baby. In addition it saves money. However there are certain clinical conditions like HIV where the mothers are advised not to breast feed their babies.
There are no special diets a breastfeeding mother must eat. A breastfeeding mother can eat a regular well balanced food with the following suggestions :
1.Drinking enough liquids is important. Because the mother during the first few days after delivery excretes excess fluid accumulated during the pregnancy. Liquids, such as juice, water, milk, and soup are recommended to quench the thirst.
2. Mothers are advised to eat a variety of healthy foods. They should eat many different foods such as meats, beans, vegetables (especially leafy green vegetables), Fruits, Breads, Cereals, and Grains, Milk, Cheese, and Eggs to get adequate k.calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals and to remain healthy.
3. Vegetarian mothers may require supplementary vitamin B12 , vitamin D, iron, and calcium during lactation.
4.Mothers are advised to limit their intake of coffee to 2 to 3 cups per day.
5.Alcohol must be avoided.
