I have heard people saying the following about staying positive:
1. You have to see and find positivity in every aspect and situation of life, no matter how adverse it is.
2. Always focus on the positives.
3. You have to be happy all the time
4. Only Positive thinking will lead to success.

Rather in life, we must be prepared for the various uncertainties, including those which may not bring a smile to our face.
Negative Emotions are equally important and essential for leading a healthy life. It is very natural for us to feel sad if we have missed a train or a flight, or to feel scared if we see a snake. What’s more important is to experience that negative emotion, be with it and then come out of it.

To summarize, Toxic Positivity in three words would be, Positivity: Anytime, Every time!
In one of his books, Mark Manson said, “The avoidance of suffering is a form of suffering. The avoidance of struggle is a struggle. The denial of failure is a failure. Hiding what is shameful is itself a form of shame”.

Some of the signs of toxic positivity are:
1. “I should stay Strong all the time”
2. Hiding/ignoring how you really feel.
3. Wanting everyone to be only Positive.
4. Feeling guilty for how you feel
5. “Failure isn’t an option”
6. “Stop being so negative”!

All of this can increase negative self-talk or rumination.

Positive psychology helps to understand what is right, rather than just focusing on what is wrong.
It is not about only “happyology” or ignoring the realities of negative experiences or the ups and downs of life. It provides meaningful insight and strategies to help people develop positive emotions, build resilience to learn from and manage negative emotions and experiences, and raise levels of wellbeing and effectiveness overall.
