When I was in school, I read something by Ruskin Bond that has stayed with me all these years. I don't remember it verbatim, but here is the essence.
Somewhere in the mountains, a young man once remarked, 'The view is terrific, but the trees get in the way!' and so Ruskin Bond exclaimed, 'Oh! But the trees are the view!'

While working on Amrit Bhawan, we added a new floor on top to increase the number of rooms. But it was pushed back from the front of the building in order to avoid disturbing the facade as well as to humanize the scale.
This provided us with the opportunity to design rooms with large, shaded terraces overlooking the river. But here's an interesting thing that happened. These terraces are at tree top level, which means that one is a constant spectator to the rhythmic dancing of the seasons. A changing landscape of leaves and birds and mango flowers turning into fruit! Isn't that lovely?

And so I am reminded again.. the trees don't block the view of the river, for it is the trees that make the view! :)

We debated for a while what colour to assign to the suite, since so many colours had already been picked out for the other rooms.
And then we questioned.. what if the suite remained as the only room completely devoid of colour? Absolutely white.
And the bathrooms? In classic contrast- absolutely black!

On a separate note, did you know that in Goa, it was upon the insistence of the Portuguese that only churches and chapels could be painted white. And so even today, all other buildings stand in a charismatic display of sun kissed yellows, earthy reds, greens and the bluest blues of the Arabian sea!

Let me talk a little bit about the renovation of the private ghat before going back to the main house.

It was a conscious design decision to not do a complete overhaul of the existing ghat. It seemed wasteful to do so, especially since it seemed to function well.
We took inspiration from traditional Indian ghats, where a number of steps are merged together to form platforms, which may be used to perform small ceremonies or to lounge around/ curl up with a book or a cup of coffee by the river.
It also made sense ergonomically, especially for the elderly, to sit comfortably and take a ritualistic bath, without actually having to step down into the river.

The long expanse of the garden towards the right, was used to add a wooden deck providing a space for early morning yoga by the river.

And the existing structure to the left, which was being used as a store was restored as a spa, where guests could enjoy rejuvenating therapies to the sound of gushing waters, thus engaging all of their senses.

Seen here, images of the constructed platforms on the ghat!

The rooms needed help. The first priority was to draw a lot more natural light into the interior spaces. There were four rooms to begin with (if I remember correctly) which got expanded into eight guest rooms. Along with this, a reception lobby, a dining hall, a library, back of house areas and large terraces with sweeping views of the river and the hills beyond, were painstakingly carved out of the existing structure.

So why go through all this trouble to restore when it’s so much easier to raze and build afresh?
Because every part of the home, whether it’s the furniture, or the old walls, or the cracked railing of the first floor terrace, is layered with memory and association.. of those who’ve lived in it..of those who’ve worked on it.. and that makes it all the more valuable!
