Occupational sitting time is associated with increased risk of premature mortality
Prolonged sitting is is a well-recognized risk factor for heart attack, stroke and premature death.
In a recent study with follow up of about 13 years, the mortality risk was compared between people who predominantly sit at work versus those who do not sit.
Main results of the study
1. Individuals who mostly sat at work had a 16% higher all-cause mortality risk and a 34% increased mortality risk from cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared with those who were mostly nonsitting at work.
2. 30 minutes of leisure-time physical activity mitigated the additional risk related to prolonged sitting at office.
Take home message
1. Avoid prolonged and continuous sitting at workplace,
2. Take a few minutes walking break every 30-45 minutes,
3. Standing desks would be welcome,
4. Coffee (breaks) can be had in standing rather than sitting position,
5. 30 minutes of walking or running in leisure time would reduce the risk related to prolonged sitting at office.
