Cushing syndrome, also known as hypercortisolism, is a medical condition characterized by the excessive production of cortisol hormone in the body. Cortisol is a hormone that helps regulate various bodily functions, including metabolism, immune response, and stress management. When there is an overproduction of cortisol, it can lead to a range of symptoms such as weight gain, particularly in the face and abdomen, thinning of the skin, muscle weakness, and high blood pressure. It can be caused by factors such as long-term use of corticosteroid medications, tumors in the adrenal glands or pituitary gland, or other underlying conditions.
