Nafisa Ali Sodhi fights cancer relapse with fresh round of chemo: Oncologist explains why ovarian cancer recurs

Dr. Archit Pandit, director, surgical oncology, Fortis Escorts, Okhla, says, “Although each patient’s cancer is different, recurrence rates are common in this type of cancer, with them being higher in advanced-stage ovarian cancer compared to early-stage disease.” Sodhi had stage 3 in 2018, which is considered an advanced stage of the disease, meaning the cancer had spread beyond the ovaries into the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) or nearby lymph nodes. But it had not spread to other organs and was fairly localised. Treatments for stage 3 ovarian cancer are comprehensive and may include surgery to remove visible cancer and chemotherapy to eliminate remaining cancer cells.

On this auspicious day, we honor Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the symbol of wisdom and fresh starts.

Just as Ganesha stands for courage and transformation, so does every patient who walks through our doors.

In 2019, I had the privilege of performing surgery on a brave patient battling re**al cancer.
Today, 5 years later, he walked into my OPD - healthy, thriving, and cancer-free.

Moments like these remind us why we do what we do. His video testimonial is a story of hope, resilience, and the power of early detection, precise cancer surgery, and follow-up care.

Grateful to have been a part of his journey.
To every patient out there - cancer is not the end. It can be beaten.

Watch his full testimonial.

We don’t celebrate every patient’s birthday in the hospital.
But this 10-year-old girl… we had to.
Not because of the cake or the candles,
but celebrate her courage when life threw her one of its toughest challenges.

Osteosarcoma.
Bone tumour.
Both lungs with metastases.
Chemo before and after surgeries.
Limb conservation.
Lung resections both side
Months of hospital visits, procedures, and uncertainty — all packed into 6–8 months.
Result - she is cancer free.

And yet, she never stopped smiling.
Never stopped fighting.

I’ve always known I could never be a paediatrician - I can’t bear to see children ill.
Back in college, I used to wander into NICUs and PICUs, almost as a strange kind of therapy for myself from them.
But this little warrior… she reminded me why we keep doing what we do, no matter how heavy the days get.

On 2nd August, the ward came alive.
nurses, and staff gathered.
We sang, cut the cake, and for a few minutes, the hospital wasn’t a hospital - it was a room full of joy, relief, and gratitude.

She didn’t just turn 10 that day.
She won. We won.

🌸✨
Ten candles danced, their flames so bright,
A warrior’s smile lit up the night.
✨🌸

Here’s to her spirit - unshakable, unbreakable, unforgettable. 💖
