Potty training isn’t just a routine change for many autistic children, it can also be sensory avoidance. The first step is always understanding why it feels hard for them.

Step 1: Understand the challenges
Bright lights, flushing sounds, bathroom smells, or difficulty communicating can all create overwhelm. Once you understand the “why,” you can support the “how.”

Step 2: Build predictability
Take your child at the same times each day, use visual schedules, and show a timer during transitions.
Avoid surprising them with a sudden “Let’s go!” — no warning → distress.
Visual + timer = consistency + comfort.

Step 3: Create a sensory-safe bathroom
Bring a comfort toy, use noise-canceling headphones, dim the lights, or add a small wall plug light.
Sometimes bathroom avoidance is actually sensory overload.

Step 4: Break it into small steps
Take it one visit at a time:
- Walk into the bathroom → high five
- Sit on toilet with clothes on → better reinforcement
- Sit with pants down → big reinforcement + praise
- Slow and steady builds trust.

Step 5: Use social stories
Reading potty books and pairing them with fun activities makes the bathroom feel predictable, not scary.
