Friend & Health - Can Former Help Latter?

Tired of slogging alone in the gym? Well, it has been seen that people with fewer friends or a gym buddy tend to skip their sessions more often. Reasons like "too tired, too much rain, too much sun," so on and so forth, tend to crop up. But, if you have a health buddy, things become much more bearable and you actually look forward to that time of the day instead of avoiding it.

This is true for diet control, exercising and a host of other health-related activities as well. So, come and figure out how to find a health buddy and how having a friend can motivate you to stay healthy!

Finding a health buddy: Look closely in your circle of friends, or even at your acquaintances who live nearby or in the same locality or building as yours. Do you see anyone who is motivated when it comes to healthcare and fitness? This friend may be the one who will become the perfect health buddy. Also, if you find someone who is in the same boat as you, but aware of the issues, you can suggest becoming a health buddy because you both can motivate each other.
Routine: Make a routine with your new health buddy and start meeting each other at regular timings and for a good amount of time. Seek each other out at parties and stay with each other to help avoid eating what you are not supposed to. Message each other your progress every day and report what you eat when you go out without this buddy.
Avoiding and dismissing: When someone is knocking at your door at five in the morning, it is usually difficult to avoid or dismiss the impending action due to social and emotional reasons. So, when your gym buddy arrives to pick you up, or when you know you have to meet this person at a certain time, you would not want to keep this friend waiting or dismiss the thought of going to the gym.
Distractions: Your health buddy will give you positive distractions by way of conversations and other such things so that you do not realise how quickly the gym session or walking time has passed by. Also, with the help of this person, you will probably not get bored which tends to make us eat junk.
So get yourself a healthy buddy and make a commitment towards health and fitness!

Walnuts - Amazing Reasons To Eat Them!

As one of the oldest tree nuts to be cultivated by humans, walnuts have long since been known as a wonder food that can prevent and manage many diseases. It is nutrient-packed and is easily available in all seasons. Including a small handful of these nuts in the daily diet can help you stay healthy and fit. Store them in an airtight container and if refrigerated they can remain fresh for many months.

Following are the reasons why you must eat them

Weight Management: Walnuts are high in fat and protein. You can sprinkle them on your salads, fruits, oats or any other cereal or eat them as they are. Due to its fat and protein content, they have a high satiety value and can prevent hunger for a long period of time.
Brain Health- Walnuts resemble the brain and the omega 3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid found in them helps improve memory, concentration and brain functions in all age groups. Regular consumption of these nuts may prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Skin Health- Vitamin E found in walnuts helps in keeping the skin healthy, glowing and young. They have been found to prevent skin dryness and delay ageing.
Heart Disease and Diabetes: The fat found in them is monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. They are an excellent source of the heart-friendly omega 3 fatty acids. The antioxidants found in walnuts keep the heart healthy and prevents type 2 diabetes. It helps regulate levels of LDL (the bad cholesterol) and enhance HDL (the good cholesterol).
Source of Minerals- Apart from being rich in fats and protein they are also a good source of various minerals like copper, manganese, zinc, selenium, calcium, potassium etc.

Can Eating Fast Food Lead To Constipation?

With the super-busy lifestyle that everybody is gravitating to, there is less and less time for everything, including cooking and eating. More and more processed foods are finding their way into the refrigerator, which can just be picked up and eaten anytime hunger pangs are felt. And we do not immediately realize that processed foods are devoid of all the essential ingredients. What we end up eating has less fiber, more salt, more preservatives (generally not very safe for all) - all leading to an unhealthy lifestyle.

Refined flour, white sugar, cheese, juices, canned juices, cheese-laden pizzas and breads, frozen foods - all these sound yummy but not something readily accepted and digested by your stomach. Try eating pizza with loads of cheese for two days and experience the bloated feeling for yourself. Not to scare you but imagine this - you would have to eat an entire medium pizza to get like 2 g of fiber. Your body requires about 25 to 40 g of fiber per day for regular health maintenance.

Biologically, our digestive system requires a lot of fiber which adds to the roughage. This is very important to help in digestion and to aid in cleansing the bowel after that. The function of the large intestine is to remove water and essential ingredients when food passes through it. A junk food passes through quite quickly, thereby leading to loss of water and ingredients. A lot of digestive issues are also related to lack of fiber in the food - polyps, colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, high cholesterol, and obesity.

Most of us are aware but tend to ignore the fact that junk food is well as the name says, junk. There is hardly anything of great nutritious value in it. There is a lot of salt and fat and artificial chemicals which all make it very tasty but with not-very-good nutritious value. Try to eat only junk food for about a week regularly, and you will surely feel:

1. Bloated (a lot of gas due to indigestion)
2. Dehydrated (excessive salt needs more water, which we don't realize)
3. Constipated (lack of fiber leading to reduced bowel movement)
4. Weak and lousy (lack of nutrition)

This, of course, does not include the harmful effects on skin, hair, looks, etc.
It does not mean you have to stop eating junk completely and eat only healthy all the time. The human body is adaptive and can take adjust to a lot of variations. It is not wise to try the example above (eating pizza for a week), while binging on junk food once in a week would definitely not hurt. Use your discretion as nobody knows your body as well as you do.

Newborn Care & Feeding - Do's & Dont's Of Them!

A newborn baby is always vulnerable and is dependent on parents for taking appropriate care. Following the fundamental guidelines with regard to safety, which get chalked out by a paediatrician, would make sure that a baby is completely safe and healthy.

It is important to take certain measures while feeding the baby as well. Parents need to follow certain do’s and don'ts in this regard as well.

Let us take a look at some of the Do’s and Don'ts while taking care and feeding of newborns:

Do’s

Be Attentive:

Pay close attention to your baby. Research suggests that if a parent holds, bonds and touches his or her baby, they might help promote the development of the brain. Plus there could be physical, emotional and mental growth taking place as well.

Care From Paediatricians:

Parents must take their child for regularly scheduled visits to the paediatricians and should get their queries solved. Do follow the recommendations of your doctor to immunize your baby at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12 months.

Care About Sleep Posture:

Always make sure to put your baby sleep on his or her back. Moreover, a baby should sleep under a comfortable temperature by wearing light clothes.

Be Concerned About Safety Measures:

Parents should always use a car seat while travelling with the baby in a car. Follow the instructions given by the manufacturer, while trying to strap the car seat into the car and the baby in the car seat.

Do Get Comfortable While Feeding:

It is important to find a very comfortable position to feed the baby. Before getting started, one must make note of the fact that there is sufficient support her back and under the baby.

Personal Touch:

Skin-to-skin touch should be made while feeding, as and when possible. Babies get a special feeling whenever it is done.

Take Time:

It is important to take time while feeding the baby. Make note of the baby's cues. Mothers can resort to singing and socializing with the baby to make the duration even more comfortable.

Don'ts

Now, let us briefly discuss what should not be done while taking care of and feeding the newborns. The tips include:

Do not show your irritation on the baby, while you make him or her take their bath.

Do not allow sick people to come close or touch your baby as they would be susceptible to catching infections.

Do not get the baby’s bottles heated in a microwave. Do not feed your baby in a noisy and chaotic place.

Do not allow the baby to fall off to sleep while you are feeding. Never let your baby sleep on the stomach as there would be a risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Obesity In Kids - Know How Gadgets Affect Their Health!

Childhood obesity is a serious condition plaguing many adolescents and children these days. Obesity brings along with it a plethora of health scares such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, all of which at a point of time were confined only to adults. Obesity in children also results in depression and self-esteem issues. Too much of calorie consumption accompanied by a sedentary lifestyle, involvement in excessive usage of gadgets and other hormonal or genetic factors contribute to obesity in children.

Overcoming Childhood Obesity-

Healthy Eating: Consider opting for vegetables and fruits over high-calorie and fatty foods such as crackers, cookies or other processed foods. Cut out on the intake of sweetened beverages that makes your child too full to grab other healthy foods. Encourage sitting together for a family meal and initiating interaction rather than turning on the TV or other electronic gadgets. Allow your child to decide his/her proportion of food and never over feed. This habit should be inculcated in the child since the formative years.

Engaging in Physical Activity: Make sure and talk your child into not spending more than two hours sitting glued to the TV set or the computer on a daily basis. Rather, egg him/her on to go out in the open and enjoy the day underneath the sun. Try and start building in your child the habits of exercising and staying active right from the beginning. This will go a long way in deciding your child’s health and overall fitness in the future. Remember! Morning shows the day. And it’s up to you to structure out your child’s ‘morning’.

Quick Tips For Parents-

Encourage:

1. Play time or physical activities in ways that your child enjoys, such as going for a walk or hike, playing at the park, playing sports, dancing or going for a bike ride (and join them!)

2. Healthy home-packed lunches

3. Drinking more water and eating whole vegetables

4.Eating when you are truly hungry, not when you’re bored, mad, stressed, etc.

5.Eating together as a family

6.Decreased meal sizes

7.Focus on health rather than taste

Discourage:

1.Too much screen time

2.Eating while watching TV or other screens

3.Eating out

4.Negative food cues and triggers by removing them

5.Skipping meals if you are hungry

Eating if you are not hungry

6.Eating by the clock (you should eat when you’re truly hungry)

7.Too much sugary drinks (sodas and fruit drinks)

Nowadays, one of the major cause of weight gain in kids is their exposure to gadgets at an early age. Instead of getting involved in physical sports they prefer playing on smartphones or PSPs or video games. Discouraging them from doing this can be a step towards good health in the future.

High Protein Diet - Must Know Things About It!

Protein is said to be a building block for the body. That being said, a high-protein diet can either have some great results to show or some terrible consequences. As long as a person is willing to learn more about it, only the former will appear!

When a person thinks of a diet that is high in protein, the automatic association is with the famed Atkins diet. This is a diet that is not only high in the amount of protein consumed but is low in the relative amount of carbohydrates.

Who is it For?

A high-protein diet is a way to go if a person is looking to build a little muscle and does not consume enough protein in his or her current or normal diet. However, studies have found that only professional endurance athletes showed any benefits from a hike in their protein consumption levels and that they could have received these benefits by just eating more food. So, it is fair to say that the normal person is not likely to need more protein than what he or she already gets by the way of his or her run-of-the-mill diet.

It can be bad too, in addition to this, if a person has an amount of protein that is beyond what is good for him or her according to the activity level, it can be quite bad. This is because a lot of the sources of protein which most people receive their protein from also happen to be relatively high in terms of saturated fat content, which can put the heart at a great amount of risk. Moreover, gout can also occur and it is something that is not curable, but can only be managed. A person who is considering the prospect of going on a high-protein diet should take these possible side effects into due account prior to making his or her decision regarding the same.

Small is Big, A modest increase in the protein part of a person’s diet can be good and there are a variety of ways a person can go about this by including some simple munch foods such as almonds. Things like these can serve well as snacks and can go a long way in preventing a person from bingeing on something less healthy just due to being ravenously hungry. Another option is Greek yogurt, as is chia seeds, which can be added to almost anything!

How Is Social Media Affecting Your Mental Health?

Being away from social media is synonymous to not following the herd. Social media, probably, is no more the latest trend; it is the given code to take a deeper look into the present age. The rewarding fact about social networking sites is their ability to transport us to people and places millions of miles away from us. Social media gifts us with easy communication and wider access. But, social media came with some problems as well, which are listed below:

1. It creates p*er pressure - Coming in continuous contact with occurrences in other people's life can lead to a mental setback. You may feel low on comparing your achievements with that of others. Consciously or unconsciously you are struggling throughout to be at par with them who are seemingly jubilant. Virtual p*er pressure is realized by many.

2. It can bring us at close quarters with penitence - Persistent grief or regret can take a toll on your mental health. It can make you depressive. Depression is again not a healthy thing for personal growth and development. It usually results in a lack of motivation.

3. You tend to panic more through continued use of social media - If you have not been in touch with social media for a couple of days you are instilled with the fear of losing out on incidents. You panic regarding what has been happening all over the world that in reality will in most cases bear no effect on you.

4. It accustoms you to the glamorous appeal of drugs - Social media tends to showcase the ills of society as glamorous contributing factors of life. It celebrates the vices of drugs and other addictive agents as virtues. Young adults are therefore easily incited to give in to addiction.

Positive effects of social media on your mental health:

1. Social media will let you take a break from hovering tasks and responsibilities.
2. Helps you connect with long lost friends. Social networking sites will bring you close to new and old friends alike.
3. Real society is overly judgmental. It prohibits you from coming across as your true self. Virtual media allows you to come out of your cocoon and helps you feel comfortable about yourself.

Therefore, there are both positive and negative effects of social media on your mental health. So, you must use it carefully without adversely affecting your mental health.

Lack Of Water In The Body - 5 Signs Of It!

Water is indispensable for the human body as 90% of the brain and almost 60% of the adult body is chiefly made up of water. Water is just as important as any of your meals. Each cell and organ depends on water for its proper functioning and for flushing out toxins and fats from the body. An average man must consume roughly 3 liters (10-12 glasses) of water daily, and a woman requires about 2.5 liters (8-10 glasses). If you're not meeting this requirement, you might fall prey to dehydration.

The state of water deficiency or dehydration can be determined through various symptoms. Read on to learn the 5 most common signs:

1. The color of your urine is dark

The color of your urine indicates your health. The lesser water you drink, the darker the color of your p*e. If your urine is pale yellow, you drink a sufficient amount of water. If it's dark yellow and concentrated, it's a sign for you to refill on water. Also, if you haven't urinated for more than two hours, you should immediately gulp 2 glasses of water.

2. You experience frequent headaches

Headaches are often caused by dehydration when the pressure from your blood vessels falls. Dehydration makes it tough for your heart to pump enough oxygen to the brain. Drinking sufficient amounts of water ensures the flow of oxygen in your body.

3. You feel dizzy and fatigued

Lack of water can often lead to laziness and restlessness. It may also cause a rapid change in your blood pressure. Low or high blood pressures are stimulants of fatigue. Water gives you instant energy that wakes up your whole system, thus making you feel revitalized.

4. You have constipated bowel movements

Water is one of the top natural remedies for constipation or troubled bowel movements. If your fluid intake is low, you're likely to have stomach, gastric, and bowel problems. The digestive system depends on water to help food move through both the intestines. It checks the functions of the digestive tract while keeping it flexible and clean.

5. You experience brain fogs and blackouts

Your brain cells and nerves react severely to water loss. You may start feeling a lack of concentration along with temporary memory loss. Blackouts are common when you have a deficit of water. You might even experience difficulty in carrying out cognitive tasks.

If you're experiencing similar issues, you must enhance your daily water intake. You can try carrying a sipper around, which allows you to keep a tab on your water consumption. To relish water as a refreshing beverage, you can infuse freshly chopped fruits and herbs in a pitcher of chilled water. This flavored water also cleanses your body of all toxins and chemicals, thus keeping you fresh.

Emotional problems - 5 Ways to deal with them!

A song. A poem. The smile on someone special’s face. Each interaction that we are a part of evokes an emotion. Emotions are the most powerful and sometimes the most painful forces in our lives. They are what inform our decisions, no matter how trivial. They dictate our actions and thoughts. Our emotional responses to different situations are what define us as individuals.

Emotions tend to oscillate between volatile extremes of rage and euphoria. Steer too far to either extreme and you might be courting danger. Much like the other aspects of life, emotions should be handled with moderation and rational thought. Here are five methods by which you can control your emotions.

1.Take a moment: Losing your temper at the slightest provocation can be distressing to both yourself and those in your vicinity. If you react immediately, you are sure to do or say something that you will later regret. So, take a deep breath and control your impulse to lash out. Take your time to control your heart rate and bring it back to normal and loosen your muscles. When you feel calmer, you will find that an outburst would have been completely unnecessary.
2.Ask for help: We all have that one friend whom we seek out when we need to vent. There is no shame in asking for help. A friend who can give us a rational, unbiased perspective on things. Someone who wants the best for us and knows our worst impulses is often times the best person to seek advice from. If you feel overwhelmed, or don’t know how to react, ask for guidance.
3.Find an outlet: Having controlled your impulsive behavior, you need to find a way to express your feelings in a positive manner. Art thrives when infused with emotions. Painting, music are enriching pursuits that can help you achieve closure. Keeping a journal where you can pen your thoughts will broaden your awareness of your own emotions.
4.Look at the larger picture: You will become more cautious of your negative emotions when you realize that your words and actions have consequences for others. Your rage at a harmless joke amongst friends could cost you a meaningful relationship. Pause and contemplate the larger picture. Do not be hasty and thus disregard how your actions might affect your future.
5.Forgive and replace: Each one of us has a number of “triggers” that arouse extreme emotions in us. These triggers can be a person, our family or friends, or they be can be things and incidents. You must learn how to let the past be past. Forgive those who may have wronged and replaced the negative thoughts that you associated with something. Do not let the recollection of a negative memory influence your behavior and actions.
