Struggling to Sleep? Blame it on the Reels! 🎶

Are you finding it hard to drift off to sleep at night?
You might want to take a closer look at your scrolling habits on social media, particularly when it comes to watching endless reels.

Research suggests that continuous exposure to short, catchy videos, especially those featuring viral songs, can have a significant impact on our sleep patterns.

As we immerse ourselves in these captivating clips, our brains become hooked on the repetitive tunes, making it difficult to switch off when it's time to hit the hay.

Psychologists warn that this phenomenon, known as the "Reel Effect," can lead to heightened levels of bedtime restlessness and insomnia. Our minds become preoccupied with looping melodies, replaying them over and over again as we try to settle into slumber.

To combat this, experts recommend implementing a digital detox before bedtime, limiting exposure to reels and other stimulating content at least an hour before hitting the sack.

Instead, opt for relaxing activities such as reading or meditation to ease your mind into a state of tranquility conducive to sleep.Remember, a good night's rest is essential for overall well-being, so next time you find yourself scrolling endlessly through reels, think twice about the impact it could be having on your sleep! 🌙

Anxiety manifests differently in kids than it does in adults. But, most adults with Anxiety actually had anxiety as kids too, perhaps they remained undiagnosed.

If your kid is usually scared of new things, hates change, has trouble socialising, has an unreasonable fear of consequence, then chances are that the child is anxious. Here's what I tell my little patients and their parents to overcome anxiety!👇🏼

1. TALK ABOUT YOUR FEAR- I encourage the kids to talk about what scares them and as the parents to do the same. Once the kid starts exploring the unknown fear, it gets easier to navigate the fear and eventually overcome it.🫂

2. BREATHING EXERCISES- Breathing exercises can be extremely useful for all age groups to feel calmer.💕

3. EXPLORE THE FEAR- Anxiety stems from the fear of unknown, encouraging and supporting a child to explore what scares them helps them see it's not that bad. For instance if a kid is anxious about dogs, they can start by interacting with one puppy to familiarise and eventually work their way up to dogs. 🚀

4. WRITE A JOURNAL- A journal is a great tool for accountability, teaching kids to journal at a young age prepares them to be truly accountable to themselves. 🌷

5. ENCOURAGING OUTDOOR STIMULATION- Kids these days are restricted to their homes and screens, resulting in a very isolated environment. Going outdoors doesn't only decrease screen time, it also stimulates the different sensory organs, making the kid more curious and adventurous... a direct antidote to anxiety!💯

Remember, a kid is like clay, the way you shape them greatly affects how strong, steady, and endurant they will be as adults. It is important for kids to grow in encouraging and supportive environments. Talk to a therapist if you feel like you need added guidance or help.

Self-care without self-love can often feel like watering a plant without nurturing its roots. While it's crucial to tend to our physical and emotional needs, true wellness emanates from a place of self-acceptance and compassion. Here's how to infuse your self-care routine with the transformative power of self-love:

🫂Acknowledge Your Worth: Start by recognizing your inherent value as a unique individual. Embrace your strengths, flaws, and everything in between. Remember, self-love isn't about perfection; it's about embracing your authenticity.

🌷Practice Positive Affirmations: Incorporate affirmations into your daily routine to challenge negative self-talk and cultivate a more empowering inner dialogue. Repeat phrases like "I am enough," "I deserve love and kindness," and "I am worthy of my own care and attention."

🌙Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to things that drain your energy or compromise your well-being. Establishing healthy boundaries is an act of self-respect and a fundamental aspect of self-love.

🧿Prioritize Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a dear friend facing a challenge. Practice self-compassion by acknowledging your struggles without judgment and offering yourself gentle encouragement.

♻️Nurture Your Passions: Make time for activities that bring you joy, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose. Whether it's pursuing a hobby, spending time in nature, or engaging in creative expression, prioritizing your passions is a powerful way to honor your unique identity and cultivate self-love.

Children who don't engage in outdoor play may face a range of detrimental consequences, both physical and psychological. Here are some of the psychological issues they may encounter:

♻️ Decreased social skills: Outdoor play provides children with opportunities to interact with peers in unstructured environments, fostering the development of essential social skills such as cooperation, negotiation, and communication. Without such experiences, children may struggle with social interactions, leading to difficulties in forming friendships and navigating social situations.

🧿 Increased risk of anxiety and depression: Outdoor play is associated with lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in children. Exposure to natural environments and physical activity releases endorphins and reduces cortisol levels, which helps regulate mood and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Conversely, children who spend less time outdoors may be more prone to experiencing these mental health issues.

👀 Delayed cognitive development: Outdoor play stimulates cognitive development by encouraging exploration, problem-solving, and creativity. Natural environments offer diverse sensory experiences that engage children's senses and promote brain development. Without regular exposure to outdoor play, children may experience delays in cognitive skills such as attention, memory, and decision-making.

🌷 Increased likelihood of attention disorders: Research suggests that spending time outdoors reduces the risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and improves attentional functioning in children. Outdoor environments provide opportunities for free movement and exploration, which can help children regulate their attention and focus. Conversely, children who spend excessive time indoors may be at greater risk of developing attention-related disorders.

So let's help our kids be better adults by encouraging them to look beyond the screen and step outdoors!
