Pratyush sharing his experience at @ Turkam Cheruvu Circuit Nirmal Telangana...
*Turkam Cheruvu Eco Tourism Circuit* – A Hidden Gem in Telangana
We camped at this amazing place called Turkam Cheruvu Eco Circuit for a night, and I must say, the experience was absolutely incredible!
Located around 290 km from Hyderabad in Nirmal district, this serene spot lies just before the Kawal Tiger Reserve, on the banks of Turkam Cheruvu (built in the early 1900s). The Telangana Forest Department has developed this picturesque site with basic yet comfortable facilities like tents and clean washrooms. Since cooking isn’t permitted, delicious local food is brought in from a nearby village.
We went on safari drives in the evening and early morning, coupled with a short hike through the forest, and believe me, it was way better organized than many well-known national parks I’ve visited!
The area features dense forest patches interspersed with small human settlements. It acts as an important corridor for tigers moving between Kawal and the forests of Maharashtra. While there are no resident tigers or leopards here, the region supports Sloth Bears, Jackals, Foxes, and herbivores such as Spotted Deer (our state animal), Blue Bulls, Bonnet and Rhesus Macaques, and Grey Langurs.
The zones around Turkam Cheruvu and Vengana Cheruvu, which can be explored by safari vehicle or on foot, are a paradise for bird watchers. We were thrilled to spot species like the Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Indian Paradise Flycatcher, Black-naped Monarch, White-bellied Drongo, Spotted Owlet, and Eurasian Hoopoe among many others.
The area is equally fascinating for herping (the study of reptiles). During a short 2 km night walk, we encountered a Rat Snake, a Giant Forest Scorpion, and several other intriguing species.
Overall, Turkam Cheruvu Eco Tourism Circuit turned out to be a hidden gem close to Hyderabad, teeming with biodiversity, and managed by an excellent, dedicated staff.
If you love nature and want to experience something truly authentic, this place deserves a spot on your travel list!
