World Hypertension Day

When to say you have high BP/ Hypertension? (time to start treatment) :
Hospital reading: 140/90 or above
Home reading: 135/85 or above

Target BP ( goal) most readings should be below 130/80

How to check BP ?
Home readings are better than hospital. Most automatic BP instruments are fine.
1. Buy one that fits over arm (and not wrist)
2. Remove clothing if thick or tight. The BP cuff should be tight enough just to allow one finger to go inside.
3. You should empty bladder,
avoid tea coffee smoking for an hour,rest for five minutes.
4. Sit on a chair with back rest with both feet on the floor uncrossed and the arm supported at heart level. You may keep a towel or pillow below your elbow / forearm.
5. Do not talk during the check.
6. Discard the first reading, take avergae of next two.
7. Check in the morning before taking any pill and again in the evening. Do this for a week. Give this chart to your doctor.

Tips: Avoid salt rich food, to***co and alcohol. Weight control,regular exercises,pranayam, good sleep and cheerful mood all are very important ways to keep bp under control. Please ask your spouse if you snore. Sleep study should be done to rule out obstructive sleep apnoea ( OSA) which is a very important cause of uncontrolled high BP. Treatment of OSA brings a big relief to these patients.

Lipid Profile*

A renowned doctor shared a beautiful story explaining lipid profiles in a unique way.

Imagine our body is a small town. The main troublemakers in this town are *Cholesterol*.
They have some accomplices too. The main partner-in-crime is *Triglyceride*.
Their job is to roam the streets, causing chaos, and blocking the roads.

The *Heart* is the city center of this town. All roads lead to the heart. When the troublemakers increase in number, you know what happens. They try to disrupt the heart's function.

But our body-town has a police force too.
*HDL* is the good cop who arrests the troublemakers and puts them behind bars (the liver). The liver then throws them out of the body through the drainage system.

However, there's a bad cop too, *LDL*, who's power-hungry.
LDL releases the troublemakers from jail and puts them back on the streets.

When the good cop (HDL) is outnumbered, the town becomes chaotic. Who likes living in such a town?
*Do you want to reduce the troublemakers and increase the good cops?*
Start walking!_ With every step, the good cops (HDL) will increase, and the troublemakers (Cholesterol, Triglyceride, and LDL) will decrease.

Your town (body) will regain its vitality. Your heart the city centre will be safe from the troublemakers' blockades (heart block). And when your heart is healthy, you'll be healthy too.

*So, start walking whenever you get the chance!*
