Dr Jitesh Patel, an Indian-origin urologist based in Georgia, has agreed to pay $14 million to resolve allegations of healthcare fraud linked to his practice, Advanced Urology. The case stemmed from whistleblower complaints filed by former employees, who accused the clinic of prioritising profits by conducting medically unnecessary procedures and tests.

According to court documents, the practice allegedly implanted medical devices without properly assessing patient need, carried out avoidable procedures requiring anesthesia, and ordered thousands of unnecessary ultrasound tests — including making them mandatory for new patients despite their limited relevance in urology. It was also claimed that billing was submitted for procedures that were never performed.

The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Health and Human Services. US Attorney Theodore S Hertzberg stated that fraudulent billing and unnecessary treatments undermine both patient trust and public funds, adding that such violations would be pursued under the False Claims Act.

As part of the settlement, whistleblowers will receive nearly $2.94 million. Authorities clarified that the settlement resolves allegations only, with no formal admission of liability. There is also no confirmation that patients suffered harm due to the procedures.

Dr Patel, known in his field and a recipient of multiple recognitions, studied medicine at Temple University School of Medicine.
