It only takes a moment. Turn off the Wi-Fi, put your phone on aeroplane mode, and remember.

Our lives are built upon the sacrifices of others. You may never know them, but they sacrificed all the same. They do so in countless ways, big and small, but fewer sacrifices are bigger than those made by the people in our armed forces. Today, on January 18, we remember those who have died or suffered in all wars and conflicts.

We remember them all: the people who sat in trenches, hoping to see home again; the young men and women who were promised adventure but found nothing of the sort; the Indigenous Indians who fought for a country that didn’t count them among its people.

We remember for many reasons. We remember to honour the fallen. We remember to recognise the sacrifices of others and the tragedy of war. We remember in the hope that people will never be called to fight again.

A lot of friends ask about how to build a crypto portfolio. So posting about development concepts that will change the world and create immense value. If you are in the camp of "will bitcoin go any higher from here", it would be good to first get a better fundamental understanding - read and view talks by Andreas A, Naval R, Vitalik B, Preethi K, Vlad Z, Fred W, Olaf C etc (posting some links at the end). If you end up making money, like some of you already have, you may donate a small portion to charities that work with children and disabled people. So here goes in no particular order:

1. Ethereum: Highest developer network effect, enable smart contracts/dapps.
2. Bitcoin: Store of value. Hedge against currencies. Payment networks.
3. Filecoin: Enable all local storage to become 'cloud' storage and decentralise storage. Will have huge impact on google/aws etc.
4. Raiden: One of the best scalability projects for ether based on off blockchain transactions for micro payments.
5. OmiseGo: Enabling financial inclusion - I like this especially because of the business minded aggression and go to market strategies of the team.
6. Neo: An enhancement/parallel to Ethereum being developed in China. Great team.
7. Civic: Identity management, vinny is an aggressive entrepreneur.
8. Blockstack: Netscape for the decentralised world. Had predicted this to happen in my blog post in 2013.
9. Steemit: Social network that rewards UGC creators as well. There will be more of these. No early mover advantage here.
10. Siacoin: Similar to filecoin but came before filecoin. Filecoin has IPFS support.
11. Zcash/monero: Privatising/securing transactions, big use case. Not sure whether will exist standalone or included in the core protocol itself. From what I know zcash algo and team is superior.
12. Ripple: Great traction with banking institutions. Will do well if the banking institutions themselves survive. Ripple will end up licensing tech to them, not sure whether the currency itself will be used. From an adoption standpoint, has had the most amount of traction and acceptance among institutions.
13. IOTA: Fancy IOT applications. The tangle tech is very interesting. Little too early from forming a conviction standpoint.

In general, between protocol level developments and end user applications, the former will create much more value at this stage.

People will find love and courage and happiness in 2018. People will graduate in 2018. People are going to meet new friends in 2018. Someone is going to meet the love of their life in 2018. Someone is going to get their first car. Someone will get off the streets. Someone is going to reunite with an old friend. Someone will leave an unhealthy relationship. Someone will learn to accept themselves. Someone will come out of the closet. Someone will transition. Someone will buy their first home. Someone will pay off their debt. A kid somewhere is going to get their first dog. Someone is going to beat cancer. Someone is going to overcome an unhealthy addiction. Someone will recover. Someone will seek help for their demons. People will reach their goals. All these are the reasons to keep going.
