World Alzheimer's Day 2025, observed on 21 September with theme “Ask about Dementia. Ask about Alzheimer's”, focuses on awareness, early diagnosis, and reducing stigma.

This is a uniquely designed Snakes and Ladders board. The activities depicted under the ladders are preventive while those depicted close to the snakes' mouths increase the risk of developing cognitive decline.

The Holiday season is arriving. I know many people love visiting South East Asia as the region offers unique unmatched travel experiences.

Whether you spend your day trekking, hiking, riding or snorkeling, it usually ends with some amazing food at your dinner table paired with your favourite alcoholic beverage.

Although I discourage drinking alcohol in any form as it usually ends up doing more harm than good, we have been coming across many cases where people have been seriously/ fatally injured after consuming alcohol tainted with methanol.

I urge people to stay cautious and select restaurants/ bars with the utmost care to prevent any untoward incident.

Procrastination is the act of voluntarily and unnecessarily delaying or putting off tasks despite knowing there will likely be negative consequences.

If you are a procrastinator, the following may apply to you -

1. You may be suffering from DEPRESSION and may not have enough mental and physical energy to start a task.

2. You may have ANXIETY of failure and the task may feel too difficult/ demanding.

3. You may be a perfectionist (have OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE PERSONALITY TRAITS) and may feel that not doing something is better than doing something imperfectly.

4. You may have ADHD where you may initially find the task boring. You will only start it once the deadline is close and the risk of not being able to complete it on time is high.

Does any of these sound familiar? Can you come up with any other causes of procrastination? Do let me know.

And ofcourse

Dysphoric - Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER) is a condition where a mother experiences episodes of sadness, anxiety or uncommonly anger associated with breastfeeding / ejection of milk due to a drop in dopamine level. These episodes last for 1 to 2 minutes and then completely disappear, only to return when breastfeeding occurs again.

It is not postpartum depression. It is a temporary neuroendocrine condition that gets better on its own in a few months as breastfeeding continues.

Many mothers with D-MER stop breastfeeding as they are not able to understand what is wrong. Increase in awareness about this condition is needed to reassure them that the condition is benign.

"Doctor I have come with emotional problems to you, I am physically healthy. Why do I need these unnecessary blood tests?"

I get this question a lot.

Very recently a patient came to me with weakness that he thought was due to his low mood, as he was being treated for depression for many years but was not getting better. I asked him to get a few blood tests done, which he thankfully agreed to. When the results came out he had a sodium level of 126, urea 75 and creatinine 3.4. I asked him to visit a nephrologist who diagnosed him with Acute Kidney Injury, and was treated accordingly.

The point is, health is a 2 way street where the mind and the body affect each other. Blood sugar, thyroid levels, vitamin deficiencies, low hemoglobin, almost every parameter can affect mental health.

I urge everyone to get a complete blood panel test done atleast once a year, whether or not you have a physical condition.

The skin and the brain develop from the same source. As a result, both have a direct relationship affecting one another.

PSYCHOGENIC PURPURA (GARDNER DIAMOND SYNDROME) is a condition where painful red bruise-like skin lesions appear spontaneously triggered by stress and emotional trauma. It can also be accompanied by bleeding spots for which no other medical explanation can be found. It is mostly seen in young women in psychological distress.

Apart from this, most skin conditions can get worse due to stress, especially acne. So if you find your skin issue not getting better with skin related treatments, it's time to pay attention to your mind.

Tired of being haunted by NIGHTMARES?

NIGHTMARES are terrifying dreams that wake you up from sleep in a panicky state.

Try IMAGE REHERSAL THERAPY/ NEW DREAM THERAPY

1. Try remembering the most frequently experienced nightmare and write it down after waking up.

2. Change the script by replacing the scary elements with more pleasant events, especially making the ending positive in the process.

3. Reherse the new script frequently during the day to get it in the memory.

4. Go to bed with the chance to experience your dream in the way you have created it while you sleep undisturbed.
