Workplace stress is rampant in almost every industry. According to new research, workplace stress can be reduced by way of cycling. In the study, it was seen that people who cycled to work reported feeling less stressed, compared with people who traveled to work by car. This may be due to physical activity involved in cycling, which is known to lower stress through endorphins release. Besides stress relief, other benefits are decreased traffic congestion and pollution as cycling practice can reduce CO2 emissions by 11 percent. Cycling may not be a viable option for employees staying very far from their workplace but those staying nearby can certainly try for its multi-fold benefits and be trendsetters.

We all experience mind wandering. In some it may take form of perpetual mental anxiety. Mindful meditation is the method of being in the present moment by conscious effort. Researchers have pointed out that just 10 minutes daily of mindful meditation can improve focus and concentration among people suffering from anxiety. Gradually, with increased awareness of the present moment, there are less episodes of losing concentration and distraction by repetitive thoughts. One can anchor to breath or some fixed external object to start with. The moment distraction is identified, one can come back to breath and observe breath. Eight weeks of consistent practice has shown positive changes in brain MRI scans in areas involved with regulation of emotion and genesis of new nerve cells. Mini- mindful meditation practice of even 5 minutes practiced sitting on office chair at workplace has also been effective in combating anxiety & stress.

Late night shifts can interfere with our body's ability to repair damaged DNA caused by normal cellular processes. In the concerned study published in Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, it was seen that sleep hormone melatonin was suppressed in night shift workers. Melatonin regulates the circadian rhythm of our body. Melatonin is also involved in repair of damaged DNA in cell and therefore the amount of damaged DNA in cells is higher in night shift workers. This unrepaired damaged DNA in cells, over long-term can cause mutations that can lead to disease and even cancer. For some persons, it is a necessary/unavoidable part of their work but rest can prevent this risk by following proper sleep schedule.

A latest research has pointed out that even moderate drinking is associated with pathological findings in the brain and faster cognitive decline rather than being protective. There is conflicting evidence regarding protective effect of alcohol in moderate amounts. Those who have not started taking alcohol but wish to and those are consuming it for protective effect can consider abstaining from it timely. Alcohol is a modifiable risk factor for many diseases and primary prevention in later life could be very late, once the cognitive impairment has set in.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one type of behavioural disorder in children with symptoms like lack of concentration, hyperactivity and difficulties in learning.
