Dr. M N Chatterjee Memorial Eye Hospital.

My family and life with animals and pets goes back many generations to my great-grandfather, the late Dr. M.N. Chatterjee (1866 to 1939), the philanthropist who donated the Dr. M.N. Chatterjee Memorial Eye Hospital (Dr. Sanders Eye Infirmary Trust) in the name of his British mentor (guru), the late Dr. Sanders.

If the saying "blood is thicker than water" means anything, then this is what happens—my great-grandfather's life revolved around numerous species of animals and birds. He was the personal physician to many British aristocrats living in India at that time and therefore had access to shiploads of the best livestock that arrived at the famous port of Calcutta. He was one of the first to make a selection, many times even before the rajas, maharajas, and nawabs got the chance to see them.

Our family of 18 children, grandchildren, and their grandchildren still basks in the legacy of his glory, inheriting among many things his deep love for animals and pets.

A recovered image of Late Dr. Saunder's who was the mentor (GURU in Bengali and also in some other Indian languages in JAPANESE - they call SENSEI) of our beloved and revered Late Dr. Manmatha Nath Chatterjee in whose name the trust property was formed by him named DOCTOR SAUNDER'S EYE INFIRMARY TRUST. So actually it was his children and grandchildren who were associated with the initiation of this hospital in 1954 mentioned the eye hospital as " DR. M. N. CHATTERJEE EYE HOSPITAL but had to mention also that DR. SAUNDER'S EYE INFIRMARY TRUST since the donation was made in the name of his GURU and not in his name. But just to make his name immortal they wrote / mentioned - the hospital as " DR. M.N.CHATTERJEE MEMORIAL EYE HOSPITAL , Dr. Saunder's eye infirmary trust."

Yet another beautiful photograph recovered . I hope all his relations and admirers are liking these . I would like to welcome the contributions from all his children , grandchildren and ALL relatives to send me photos with their full names and relation going back to this great soul with whom we are genetically connected . Even a clear photograph taken with a good smart mobile from an old black and white photo frame will do. Just take the photograph out of the photo frame and click a clear picture. You may take anyone's help who is good at it and send it to me by WhatsApp. I shall try and recover them to its near originality and publish on this page . One of the numerous houses built and owned by Late Dr. M. N. Chatterjee .. this one was a little special . Built in Baghbazar on the banks of the river Hooghly ( Ganga as we refer to it in Bengali ) was a house where the late Doctor enjoyed and shared music with famous musicians of Calcutta and the country of that era.
This Bagbazar Ganges facing building, is where he held those Musical Soiris , on the first floor of the house.. Music Stalwarts like, Moijuddin khan, Vaaia Ganpat Raao, Durlov Bhattacharya, Mahindra Nath MUKHOPADHYAY, Girija Chakraborty & a host of others,, used to come, who were entertained by Dr. M.N.Chatterjee himself. (You shall find reference to this in the book Bharater sangeet guni, by Dilip Mukhopadhyay).....

Late Dr. Manmatha Nath Chatterjee -(1866 to 1939 ) my Great Grand Father also a noted Philanthropist who donated a major part of his life's savings for the cause of charity. DR. M. N. CHATTERJEE MEMORIAL EYE HOSPITAL and the iconic BRITISH TYPE ARCHITECTURAL BUILDING still stands tall and is running with glory since 1954 and is a heritage property ( as recognised by the Government of India ) stands proudly opposite the SCIENCE COLLEGE at RAJABAZAR, KOLKATA.
There are still many of his grandchildren and great grandchildren who have been continuing to fulfill the wishes of this great man as mentioned in his last will and testament , selflessly .
My pronam and salute to all my uncles and relatives who share and carry the same legacy of this great soul that is gloriously continuing to render a healing touch to millions over the years.
