“Is rock salt healthier than table salt?”
Let’s break it down scientifically.
🧂 1️⃣ Table Salt (Refined Salt)
What it is:
Highly refined sodium chloride. Usually fortified with iodine.
✅ Benefits
✔️ Prevents iodine deficiency disorders
✔️ Supports thyroid hormone production
✔️ Affordable & widely available
✔️ Uniform taste and dissolves easily
⚠️ Concerns
Highly processed
May contain anti-caking agents
Excess intake increases risk of:
High blood pressure
Heart disease
Kidney strain
👉 In India, iodine fortification was introduced to prevent goiter and thyroid disorders.
🪨 2️⃣ Rock Salt (Sendha Namak / Himalayan Pink Salt)
Often marketed as “natural” or “chemical-free.”
Popular types:
Himalayan Salt
✅ Benefits
Less processed
Contains trace minerals (iron, magnesium, potassium)
Preferred during fasting in Indian culture
Slightly milder taste
⚠️ Reality Check
95–98% is still sodium chloride
