Let's understand the general guidelines about diet for asthma patients.

Extreme should be avoided that is the diet should not be very hot, very cold, very spicy, very bland, very pungent, very mild, very sweet, very sour, very bitter or oily.

Baked food is preferred to fried and boiled food.

Moderation in quantity and quality of diet is always beneficial.

It is better to avoid food which is known to be allergic.

Avoid synthetic and artificial foods.

Have a natural and simple diet.

Don't eat fruits which release histamine e.g.banana or sour fruit which irritate the throat e.g. lemon.

Also do not eat irritant vegetables like elephants root (suran), potato (aloo) etc.

Avoid stale food.

Instead of taking 2 principal meals in a day, the asthma patient should take lighter food 4 times a day.

Drink ample body warm Portable water when thirsty.

How to eat is as important as what to eat. 'Drink food and Eat milk' is a golden rule of food intake that is true. The solid food and turn it into a liquid form while eating and sip the liquids like milk.

In successive series we will see yogic kriya which helps to keep nasal cavity clean and makes breathing comfortable and easy.

Asthma is often life-long disorder. Because it is psychosomatic in nature, medical science has failed cure it only through drugs. More effective, however, is Yogic treatment which can minimize attacks as also their severity by building a healthy respiratory system and ensuring in the end a perfect balance of the mind and body, through proper yogabhyas.

Hatha yoga is an inexhaustible treasure of yogic practices. There are many yogic kriyas ( cleansing processes for purifying the internal body cavities), Asanas ( postures), for giving firmness and steadiness to the body, Bandhas( Internal contraction), for activation of the nerve centers, Mudras( symbols) for activating glands and Pranayamas ( Disciplined breathing), for balancing emotional life. These practices of Hatha yoga take the sadhaka to a spiritual path and develop a holistic and healthy personality.

In successive series we will see general guidelines about diet.
